
Curtis Alton Bass Sr. age 86, of Pleasant Hill, NC passed away August 12, 2016.
Alton was born in Northampton County, NC on January 28, 1930 to Lloyd Alton and Mollie G. Bass. He was also preceded in death by his wife Mary Frances Reid Bass and three sisters, Inez Mayle, Virginia Glover and Agnes Moore.
He is survived by his son, Curtis Bass Jr. and his wife Lola. One sister, Lucille Jones and many nieces and nephews.
Alton was born and raised in the Bethel Community near Seaboard. He graduated from Seaboard High School where he had played on the high school basketball team. In 1953 he married
Mary Frances Reid of Roanoke Rapids and shortly after was inducted into the US Army. He served 18 months in Japan during the Korean War as a cryptographer, then returned to Northampton County to farm. After farming he worked several positions before finishing his career with as an officer with the Department of Corrections.
Alton had a strong belief in God and was a life-long member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was a choir member for many years and also served his church over his life as sexton, treasurer, teacher and deacon.
Alton always had a love of softball. He played on his church softball team and later was a certified umpire for high school league softball.
He was a longtime member of Seaboard Lions Club.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Cox and Rev. Rick Barnes officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Church Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church building fund.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Tuesday, August 16, 2016 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.
