Richard Verne Collins

Richard Verne Collins, 74, of Roanoke Rapids and formerly of Kansas, died at 8:01 AM, Friday March 11, 2016, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.

He was born on March 28, 1941 to Emil Verne Collins and Stella Maxine Collins.

He was preceded in death by His Mother, Stella Maxine Collins, his Father, Emil Verne Collins and his Wife, Lavon Collins.

He is survived by two sons, Richard Collins, Jr. (Lisa) of Missouri and Randall Collins (Debbie) of Missouri; one daughter, Michell Self (Michael) of Tennessee; the children’s mother, Leila Messner of Kansas; one brother, Robert Collins of Kansas; seven grandchildren, Taylor, Mikala, Shalya, Dylan, Kaylin, John and Jeff and two great grandchildren, Gavin and Landon.

He is survived by his step-children Terry Webb and her husband, Boogie Webb, of Roanoke Rapids and Bonnie Kaiser and her husband, Ron Voll, of Overland Park, Kansas and Scott Kaiser of Coon Rapids, Minn, and four grandchildren, Stephen Kaiser, Elizabeth Locke, Virginia Webb and Grace Webb.

He is also survived by his extended family which included Deborah Poston of Lumberton, NC and Anthony “Tony” and Wendy Strickland of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mr. Collins was United States Veteran of the Air Force and he loved to spend time with family and his very good friends. He enjoyed his dog Daisy Mae and was an avid fan of the Kansas Jayhawks and The University of North Carolina Tar Heels. He touched the lives of everyone he met and his smile and sense of humor will be greatly missed by many.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate Richard’s Life will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 6:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Marleen Dempsey Edwards 73 went home to be with the Lord Saturday March 19, 2016.

She was born to Kathleen and Roger Dempsey, June 7, 1942.

Marleen retired from AT&T after 36 years of service. She loved her Lord and was active in Lake Gaston Baptist Church. She loved traveling and especially with the Lake Gaston Baptist Adventurers.

She was an active member and past regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy chapter 2332 Roanoke Rapids.

She loved her home on Lake Gaston and spent hours communicating with her Lord taking in the lakes beauty.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 54 years Lonnie Edwards, son Chris Edwards and his fiancé Jennifer Williams of Rocky Mount; Brother Jerry Dempsey and his wife Sue of Soddy Daisy, TN;
Sister-in-laws, Judy Edwards and June Hedgepeth both of Nashville; brother-in-law Kemp Edwards and his wife Terry of Castalia; three nieces, two nephews, five great nephews and one great niece.

A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday March 22, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Lake Gaston Baptist Church in Littleton, NC with Rev. Todd Stout and Rev. Patrick Edwards officiating.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The Family will receive friends from 10 A.M. until service time at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lake Gaston Baptist church building fund 128 Lynwood Road Littleton, NC 27850.

James 'Jimbo' Francis Dickens

James “Jimbo” Francis Dickens, 71, died Saturday, March 19, 2016, at Vidant Health Center in Greenville, NC.

Jimbo was born, November 19, 1944, in Bostic, NC, to the late Francis Marion Dickens and Pearl Dycus Dickens.

He was a graduate of Weldon High School and North Carolina State University.

After college, he attended Officer Candidate School in FT. Benning, GA and later served his country as a Lieutenant in the United States Army where he was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.

After he was honorably discharged from the military, he came home to work in the family business, Dickens & Hux Awning Company.

He also loved being in the outdoors where he loved hunting and was an avid fisherman.

In addition to his father, Jimbo was preceded in death by his grandson, Cody Gainey.

Surviving are his wife, Betty “Scottie” Dickens, of the home; son, Jamie Dickens and girlfriend, Jamie, of Roanoke Rapids; daughters, Michele Wilson and husband, Tim, of Littleton and Traci Roberts and husband, Curry, of Roanoke Rapids; mother, Pearl D. Dickens of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Susan Lynch and husband, David, of Warrenton; grandchildren, Kayla & Cody Dickens, Brandon Love, Brooke Gainey, Coleman Glasgow, Joshua, Zach & Cameron Wilson, Gabriel, Isabella, Curry II, and Noah Roberts. Also surviving are his niece, Sydney Lynch and his nephew, Will Lynch.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 6-8 pm.

Rev. Jeremy Kobernat will conduct funeral services Thursday, March 24, 2016 in the chapel at Hockaday at 2:00 pm.

Interment will immediately follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Robyn was born March 6, 1996, the daughter of Lori Hutchinson Barnes and the late Bennie Barnes.

She was also pre-deceased by her paternal grandparents Bennie C. Barnes Jr. and Mary P. Barnes, her maternal grandmother, Linda Hutchinson, her uncles and aunt, B.J. Hutchinson and Bennie Edison Barnes.
Robyn was a Freshman at North Carolina Wesleyan College where she was majoring in Business Administration. She was a 2015 graduate of Northeast Academy in Lasker, NC, where she enjoyed attending school and enjoyed playing sports, including Tennis, Basketball, Softball and as a member of the Shooting Team.
She is survived by her mother, Lori Hutchinson Barnes, her sister, LeAnn Howard and her husband Neal and her brother, Larry “L.J.” Barnes.
Her maternal grandparents, James Hutchinson and his wife Joyce. Her fiancé, William Martin. Her uncles and aunts, Jamie Kirkland, Michael Hutchinson, Billy and Anna Turner, Larry and Rachel Bolton, Thelma Barnes, and Clarence And Ann Barnes. Also many friends.
Funeral services will be held, Friday, March 25, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Conway Baptist Church, Conway, NC with Rev. Willie McLawhorn and Rev. Darren Lambert officiating.

Burial will follow at the Town of Conway Cemetery.

George Arnold Powell, age 75, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2016.

Mr. Powell, a native of Halifax County, was born May 18, 1940, to Vestly Bryham Powell and Kathleen Green Powell.

He served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Conflict.

Mr. Powell was retired as an electrician for Bryant Durham Construction Company for 37 years.

He is survived by his special friend Corinne Holmes of Conway; his brother Benjamin Powell and his wife, Connie of Roanoke Rapids; his niece Margaret Bunch and her husband Marty of Roanoke Rapids; his nephews Delbert Powell and his wife Seretha of Roanoke Rapids; and Michael Powell and his wife Jamie also of Roanoke Rapids. Mr. Powell also leaves behind two great nephews Colby Powell and Matthew Bunch; a great niece, Madison Bunch; and his Aunt Velma Marie “Sister” Nowell.

Funeral Services for Mr. Powell will be held on Friday, March 25, 2016, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Jimmy King officiating.

Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery with Military Rites.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 24, 2016, from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services and other times at 1406 East Circle Drive in Roanoke Rapids.

Mr. Bobby Wayne Ricks age 72, of Henrico, NC, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC.

Mr. Ricks was born June 25, 1943 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Napoleon Ricks and Maude Barnes Ricks. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Hazel Ricks Vinson, Mandy Ricks Martin and a brother Henry R. Ricks.
He was a retired electrician and worked for International Paper Company.
He is survived by his wife, Mavis Vincent Ricks. His daughters, Scarlet Ricks Smith and her husband Richard and Crystal Ricks Garner and her husband Mark, Darzette Alston and her husband Kevin. His son, Kencie Brewer. A brother, Jimmy Ricks. Four grandchildren, Collin Smith, Candice Smith, Ashton Garner and Berkley Garner.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 12:00 Noon at Gaston Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Flood and Rev. Rick Barnes officiating.

Entombment will follow at Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Bertha was born July 24, 1938 in Westmoreland County, PA, to the late William Peter Clemens, Sr. and Lida Patricia Baker Clemens. She was also preceded in death by her brothers: William P. Clemens, Jr. and Samuel Clemens; her daughter: Agnes Elizabeth Clemens.

Bertha attended Good News Baptist Church and loved her church family.

She is survived by her daughter: Patricia Louise Brewer of Leechburg, PA; her sisters: Agnes Lee and her husband Bob of Cheasepeake, VA, Mary Ann Clemens, Irene Francis Clemens and Agusta Catherine Boyd; her brother: James Sylvester Clemens.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 1, 2016 at Good News Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy King officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Kenneth Wayne Turner age 44, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away Monday, March 28, 2016 as the result of an
automobile accident.

Kenny was born May 18, 1971, in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

He was a welder, a loving father and friend.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Faison Maccleman, a brother Dale Turner, his grandparents, Reuben and Barbara Turner and his wife Bonnie Carroll Turner.
He is survived by his father, Bobby “Punk” Turner (Rhonda), his fiancé Britney Shaw, five children, Matthew Turner, Joshua “Jabug” Turner, Allison Turner, Lucus Turner and Jade Turner. His brothers, Tony Turner and Chris Turner. His sisters, Bobbie Smith and Dawn Maccleman. Three grandchildren, Mason, Little Matt and Aden.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Kenny’s life will be held Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Rev. Dennis Gregory Jr. officiating.

Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Rosalie Ross Thomason, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2016, at WakeMed following a long illness.

She was surrounded by her family.

Rosalie was 77.

Born on June 17, 1938 in Roanoke Rapids, she is the daughter of Eula Taylor Jones and Willie Harrison (Buck) Jones.

She graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School before marrying Robert Edward (Bobby) Thomason at New Hope Methodist Church on January 29, 1960.

The two were married fifty-six wonderful years.

During the life they made together, she dedicated herself to making a lovely and welcoming home and to raising her children.

She supported her husband in all his efforts including his commitments to the United States Naval Reserve. She was honored with a plaque from the Navy when Bobby retired from service.

Rosalie loved trees, flowers, and everything beautiful in the natural world.

From her kitchen window, she watched tiny birds at the feeder. Her favorite activity was to work in her yard with its twenty, majestic oak trees and scattered pink azalea bushes.

She was a member of the Arbor Day Foundation. The sound of a chainsaw made her cringe.

Rosalie also enjoyed collecting art and going to the NC Ballet with her daughter and grandson.

Her favorite song was La Vie en Rose.

She read mysteries and historical novels voraciously, sometimes late into the night.

Most of all, she loved her family.

She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1973, and tried to live according to her beliefs. Rosalie is survived by her husband, Bobby Thomason; of the home, her daughter, Catherine Sue Thomason of Roanoke Rapids; her son Robert Edward Thomason II, also from Roanoke Rapids; her beloved grandson Taylor Jade Stevison of Roanoke Rapids; her cherished sister Sonja Jean Kidd of Roanoke Rapids; her niece Victoria Leigh Kidd of Winchester Virginia, with whom she had a special bond; her niece Stephanie Jean Brown of Roanoke Rapids; her nephew Michael James Liagoure of Garysburg; her niece Haley Ann Cribbs of Valparaiso, Indiana; her niece Julie Ann Smith of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina; her nephew John David Cribbs of Tempe, Arizona; her sisters in law Ann Bynum of Edenton, North Carolina, and Lucia Cribbs of Valparaiso, Indiana; and her mother in law, Lattie Thomason, whom she greatly admired of Roanoke Rapids.

Rosalie is preceded in death by her father, Willie Harrison Jones of Hampton, Virginia; her mother Eula Taylor Jones of Roanoke Rapids; and her father in law John Benjamin Thomason of Roanoke Rapids. The family will hold a graveside service at the old Cedarwood Cemetery on Friday, April 1 at 3:00 p.m. Brother Pete Jones of the Riverside Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses will preside over the ceremony.

Memorials may be given to the Arbor Day Foundation.

Martha Elizabeth “Libby” Bowers Myrick went to be with the Lord on March 30.

She was a resident of The Crossings at Ironbridge, an Assisted Living facility near her family in Chester, Va.

Born in South Rosemary on January 14, 1933, she spent all but 6 months of her 83 years in Roanoke Rapids.

She was a longtime employee of Sears Roebuck where she made friends with everyone she met.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Tom Myrick, Sr., her parents Walter and Lela Bowers, and her brothers Willard Bowers and George Nethercutt.

She is survived by her two sons, Tom Myrick, Jr. and wife Pamela of Colonial Heights, Va., and Randy Myrick of Petersburg, Va., four grandchildren, Peggy Elizabeth, Tom III, Brittany, and Kristen, and two great grandchildren Jack and Alice.

Graveside services will be held at 2PM on Friday April 1 at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Reverend Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service.

Helen Konwerski Hoscila 98, of Roanoke Rapids, died Monday March 28, 2016.

Helen, a native of Hamtramck, Michigan, was the daughter of the late Saweryn and Florence Kozontala Konwerski.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Henry J. Hoscila.

She is survived by her four sons, Frederick J. Hoscila and his wife, Barbara of Suttons Bay, Mich.; Edward T. Hoscila and his wife June of Croswell, Mich.; Gary A. Hoscila and his wife, Carol of Temperance, Mich. and James C. “Jim” and his wife Karen of Roanoke Rapids, NC; nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be held Monday April 4, 2016 at 12 noon at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Wekesa Pius officiating.

Mr. Leslie Howell Britt age 77, of Severn, NC passed away Friday, April 1, 2016 at Life Care Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC.

Mr. Britt was born November 2, 1938, in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Alvin L. Britt and Mattie Tillery Britt. He was a general contractor before his retirement and served the Military Police in the US Army.
He is survived by his sons, David Kevin Britt and his wife Billie Jean and Barry Keith Britt. His former wife, Carol Britt. His brother, Ronald Owen Britt and his wife Gail. Three sisters, Janet Britt Davis, Anita Britt and Andrea Britt and Bryant her husband David. Two grandsons, David Britt and Dillon Kevin Britt. Also five nieces.
Graveside services will be held Monday, April 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Severn Cemetery in Severn, NC with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.

Ruth Bracy Baker Smith, age 87, died peacefully at Spring Arbor Assisted Living of Kill Devil Hills, NC on Monday April 4, 2016.

Mrs. Smith was born to Odie Lawrence Bracy and wife Eugenia Parker Bracy on July 11, 1928 in Hertford County, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Graham Arnold Baker, her second husband, Bobby Smith, as well as her parents, five brothers and a sister.
Over the years prior to her retirement Mrs. Smith worked for Ahoskie Manufacturing Company, Kellwood Company, the Tomahawk Restaurant for her brothers Odie and Randy Bracy and Smith Plumbing Company with her husband Bobby Smith. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie.
Her survivors include her son Ronald G. Baker and his wife, Clara R. Baker; her son Jerry L. Baker and his wife, Elizabeth A. Baker; her grandson, Ronald Graham “Grae” Baker, Jr.; her granddaughters, Erin Baker Fritsch and Carole Baker Morton; and her great grandchildren Levi Morton, Penelope Morton, Walker Fritsch, Baker Fritsch and Kamryn Baker.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the Ahoskie Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.

Larry Wayne Rooker Sr., 74, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Tuesday, April 04, 2016, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his Sister Elizabeth R. Quay.

Mr. Rooker, a native of Halifax County was born July 21, 1941, to William Henry Rooker and Rebecca Carroll Rooker.

He was a 1959 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School where he played football and baseball. He taught karate for many years and was a 5th degree black belt.

Mr. Rooker loved cooking, gardening, fishing, hunting and dancing at the Chattahoochee Country Club in Gaston. He worked as an electrician and EMT at Champion International Paper Company where he retired after 40 years of service.

He is survived by his loving wife Aline Stokes Rooker; his three sons Larry W. Rooker Jr. and his wife, Lynn of Roanoke Rapids, Howard Rooker and his wife, Chris of Roanoke Rapids, and Russell Rooker and his wife, Julie also of Roanoke Rapids; four sisters, Lucy R. Scott of Littleton, Carolyn R. Boucher of Littleton, Jean Jones and her husband, Tom of Gaston, and Faye Rooker of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Ray Rooker and his wife, Kathy of Roanoke Rapids; six grandchildren, Kaitlyn Rooker Smith and her husband Kevin, Jacob Rooker, Justin Rooker, Candace Rooker, Cory Rooker, Melissa Rooker; and one Great Grandson, Kevin Ayden Smith.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the diabetes association.

Ronald Dan “Winky” Bullock, Sr., also known as “The Mayor of Taylor St.”, died Tuesday, April 05, 2016, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.

“Winky” was born, September 13, 1945, in Halifax County to the late William Richard Bullock and Lula Mae Bullock King.

He was a veteran having served in the United States Navy and later was a mechanic with Jim Redwine’s Garage.

In addition to his parents, “Winky” was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann Bullock; brothers, Mike and Dennis King; sister, Judy Johnston and his faithful companion, Fat Cat.

Surviving are his sons, Ronald Bullock, Jr. and wife, Susan, of Eden, Thomas E. “Winky Jr.” Bullock and April Pittman of Roanoke Rapids and Richard Ray Bullock of Daytona Beach, FL; daughters, Elizabeth B. Mills, Teresa B. Shearin and husband, Dean, both of Roanoke Rapids, and Christina Marie Bullock; brothers, Winky’s twin brother Donald Wayne “Rooster” Bullock and his wife, Belinda, of Skippers, VA, Herbert Wilson King, Jr., David Lynn King and fiancé, Kim Shaw, both of Roanoke Rapids, Bill King of Gasburg, L.C. King, David “Pollock” Bullock, both of Roanoke Rapids, and Richard Bullock of Raleigh; sisters, Gloria Jean Mills and husband, Carol, of LaCrosse, VA, Pricilla Bullock of Emporia, and Deborah Bullock of Greensboro; grandchildren, Austin Bullock and wife, Katie, Justin Bullock, Raven B. Barnes and husband, Andre, Kenneth Mills and wife, Breanna, Melissa Butler and husband, Corey, Cole Ray Bullock, Jacob Bullock, Gary Shearin and Brad Shearin. Also surviving are 6 great grandchildren and two very special friends who were like daughters, Pam Martin and Sue Bullock.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Thursday, April 7, 2016, from 6-8 pm.

Rev. Annie Smith will conduct funeral services in the chapel at Hockaday Friday, April 8, 2016 at 11:00 am with interment to follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
