Carol Ann Borthwick Daugherty 83, died Wednesday August 31, 2016.

Carol is a native of Lorain Ohio, was the daughter of the late Tom P. and Elizabeth J. Borthwick.

She is survived by her children and spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren: Tom (Kristy) Stanfield of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina;Linda (Rick) Hallett of Peoria, AZ; Barbara (Kevin) Bushnell of Roanoke,Virgina; 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren: Rick (Deb) Hallett and Kayleigh, Brian Hallett, Jennifer Stanfield and friend Telly Shearer; Ashley (Joshua) Powell,Kara (Josh) Cundiff and Tyler and Kylie,Dawn (Brian) Blount and Nathan, Evan and Maeve; Judith Bushnell and boyfriend Kevin Diomedi, Elizabeth (Tony) Phillips, and Drake (Amy) Bushnell.

The family would like to thank special friends, Marilyn and Howard Hale and Josie Abbott for all their love, care and concern for Carol. Also to Liberty Commons thanks for the care, that you gave.

On Wednesday September 7, 2016, the family will be receiving friends beginning at 6:30 P.M. followed by Memorial Services at 7:30 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Minister Bane Angles officiating.

Mr. Willis Ray Dunlow age 59, of Millienium Road, Aulander, NC passed away Monday, September 5, 2016 at his home.

Willis was born January 7, 1957 in Ahoskie, NC, the son of the late Ora Ray Dunlow and Janice Hurdle Dunlow.

Willis had a degree in Art and had taught commercial art at Chowan College.
He survived by his sister, Anita Dunlow and her fiancé Neil Ray, his brothers, Dennis Dunlow, Ronnie Dunlow and his wife Pam and Bobby Duncan and his wife Shannon. Also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Raleigh Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow at Job Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 7, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Mr. Robert R. Simmons age 49, of Gaston, NC passed away Saturday, September 3, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Simmons was born December 24, 1966 in Ohio and had lived here in North Carolina for a number of years. He was an electrician.
He is survived by two children, Shawn Spillane (Bobbie Jo) of Roanoke Rapids and Victoria  Keeter of Tennessee. Two extended family members, Kevin West and Dristen West.
A Time to Celebrate Robert's Life was held at his home in Gaston on Monday, September 5, 2016.

My Dad, Beatty Thomas Brown, 92, of Henrico NC at Lake Gaston, formerly from Norfolk, VA, died September 3, 2016.

Mr. Brown was born and raised in Pamplin, VA, in Appomattox County.

As a young boy he went to work in CC camps, planting trees and doing other agricultural works to help his widowed Mother, Mary Elizabeth Davis Brown, his Father, James Thomas Brown was a farmer and died when he was only 5 years old.

Beatty then enlisted into the Army and fought in WW II, he was rifleman in the infantry on the islands in the Pacific until the war ended; He was very proud to have served his country and would bring tears to his eyes every time when he sat with friends and family and told stories of the war. After the war, he got a job on the Norfolk and Southern railroad, where he worked for 18 years, and then he moved to Norfolk, VA and worked for 26 years at the Naval Air Station. He was a wonderful father and husband and “My Buddy” a kind and gentle man.

He is survived by me Rebecca (Becky) Brown Beasley and my husband, John (Rob) Beasley of Lake Gaston. He will be buried along with my Mother, Betty Rodgers Brown in Pamplin, VA.

Elsie Padgett Newsome, 73, of Emporia, widow of Thomas P. “Tommy” Newsome, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2016.

She was the daughter of the late Martha F. and Paulous A. Padgett and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Seamans and Shirley Jennette Padgett and three brothers, Charles A. Padgett, Arnold Padgett and Glenn Padgett. Mrs. Newsome is survived by her daughter, Tamera Newsome Jarratt; three grandchildren, Brooke Nicole Jarratt, Kayla Loraine Jarratt and Austin Craig Jarratt; two great-grandchildren, Lailah Cheyenne Baylor and Rilee Arielle Baylor; three sisters, Elizabeth “Lou” Harrell, Barbara P. Holloway and husband, Billy and Lovie McQuordale; brother, Clyde Padgett and wife, Mary Lou three sisters-in-law, Diane Newsome Jones and husband, Teeny, Betty Padgett and Juanita Padgett and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 9 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Roye was born June 17, 1937 in Johnston Cou,nty, NC, the daughter of the late Garland Mangum and Mayburn Blackmon Mangum. She was also predeceased by her husband, Henry Earl Roye.

Esther was born May 16, 1953 in Murfreesboro, NC, the daughter of the late Fred Cyril Curley Jr. and Mattie Knight Curley.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan Marie Brinkley. a sister, Donna Faye DeBerry. two brothers, Fred Chester Curley and Ernest Wayne Curley. Three grandchildren, Matthew Cole Evans, Katelynn Marie Evans and Ashley Elizabeth Lassiter.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and also on Friday, from 5:00 until 8:00 Pm at the home of her brother Ernest Wayne Curley.

Charlie Otis Bray 91 of Raleigh, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday September 13, 2016.

Charlie was born in Danville, Virginia to the late John Robert and Mannie Rachel Bray. Charlie Served his Country during WWII in the United States Army. He was the owner operator of Bray Supplies for many years in Roanoke Rapids.

He was an avid coon hunter, receiving many awards over the years.

He is survived by his wife Bertha Bray, his daughter, Barbara B. Westbrook and her husband, Jimmy of Rolesville; his granddaughters, Melissa Bray Smith and her husband, Brian of Roanoke Rapids, Whitney Nicole Tolbert of Rolesville; five great grandchildren; three sisters, Jeri Branham of Sunset Beach, Dot Dolinger and her husband, Bobby of Fredricksburg, Va and Nita Graham of Danville, Va; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday September 15, 2016 at 6 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation services with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Interment will be on Friday September 16, 2016 at 11:30 P.M. in Westlawn Garden of Memory in Winston-Salem, NC with Military rites.

Greg was born in Vallejo, CA, November 1, 1984, to Willis Cleveland Ricks, Jr. and Anna Ricks Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willis “Bill” Ricks, Jr.; paternal grandparents, Margaret and Willis Ricks and maternal grandparents, Mary and Orville Fleck.

Surviving are his mother, Anna Lewis and step father, Bob, of Littleton, NC; sons, Nolyn Pearson of Roanoke Rapids, Collin Ricks and Leland Ricks both of the home; step sister, Beth Benson and husband, Daniel, of Clayton; aunts and uncles, Joey Ricks and wife Carole, of Roanoke Rapids, Norman Lanum of Littleton, James Fleck and wife, Pat, of Fresno, CA, Dennis Fleck and wife, Debbie, of Madera, CA, Larry Fleck of San Francisco, CA, Beth Shepard and husband, Mike, Doris Carter and husband, Danny, Jimmy McClung and wife, Jean, all of Roanoke Rapids, Annette White and husband, Don, of Syracuse, NY; adopted aunts and uncles, Phil Lewis and wife, Betty Jo, John Thompson and wife, Gloria, Susan Furtado and Ray Nevins. Also surviving are a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rev. Darren Lambert will conduct a service of remembrance Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service at 6:30 pm. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Donald Carl Odenkirk, 77, of Littleton, NC, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2016.

Donald was born in Wooster, Ohio, to Dorothy E. Messner and Carl F. Odenkirk. He served his country in the United States Air Force and served as a Past Commander in U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary on Lake Gaston where he served from 2001-2010.
He was also a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Littleton, NC. Donald worked for IBM in management for 32 years.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Loiuse Gardner Odendkirk; his Daughter, Lynda Odenkirk of New Haven, CT; his son, Robert Odenkirk and his wife Missy of S. Glens Falls, NY; and his Sister Gini Davis of Las Cruces, NM; and his 3 Grandchildren and his 5 Great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Askew Funeral Service on Friday September 30, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Stan Lewis officiating.
There will be two visitations, the first will be on Thursday September 29, 2016 at Askew Funeral Service from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. and the second visitation will be held on Friday September 30, 2016 at Askew Funeral Service from 10:00 A.M. till Service time.

Tanya Laine Burt Brett, age 50, passed away Friday, September 23, 2016 at her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward “Bama” Burt and her mother Betty James Burt.
She was active in the Charlotte area with the ECU Pirate Club chapter and the American Women’s Business Association.
She loved tennis, movies, books and Lake Gaston where she spent her summers growing up and spent a lot of time with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Mike Brett, her brother Travis Burt and wife Cassie Burt of Emerald Isle, NC. Her nephew, Branden Burt and wife Jessica of Angier, NC and her niece, Kirsten Burt of Emerald Isle, NC. Her mother and father in law, Peggy and Wayne Brett of Halifax, NC , brother-in-law, Mike Brett of Greenville, NC and many friends that were also her family.
Services for her Remembrance will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Calvary United Methodist Church, 136 Calvary Church Road, Littleton, NC.

(January 25, 1960 - September 25, 2016) age 55 of Gaston, NC, departed this life on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at UNC Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill, NC.

Randolph, son of Hattie Louise Ingram Roberts, was born January 25, 1960 in Northampton County, NC.

He received his formal education through the public schools of Northampton County.

Randolph, fondly called "The Player", enjoyed being around people. There was never a dull moment and whenever you were in his presence, he always kept you laughing. He possessed a special love for his family and friends and was never a stranger to anyone.

Randolph was preceded in death by his grandparents: Cornelius and Colonia Ingram and his uncle, Cornelius "June Bug" Ingram.

Treasured memories will remain with his mother: Hattie L. Roberts of Gaston, NC; his children: Colonia Ann Belfield and friend, Curtis Young of Gaston, NC and Tevin Scott of Roanoke Rapids, NC; two grandchildren: Nijah Louise Smith of Gaston, NC and Jada Scott of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his sister: Diana Broady (Julius) of Gaston, NC; three aunts: Delious Spain (James) of Charlotte, NC, Catherine Banks and Nannie Smith of Garysburg, NC; a devoted friend: Clementine Belfield of the home; special brother: Phillip Moncure of Roanoke Rapids, NC; special friend: James Simmons of Gaston, NC; several great-aunts; a host of cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Shelby Jean Barber Mann, 69, died at her daughter’s residence on Colonial Dr. Wednesday, September 28, 2016.

Shelby was born, December 21, 1946, in Lunenburg County, VA to the late Floyd Washington and Inez Jeter Barber.

She was set in her ways, always spoke her mind and you always knew where you stood with her and she always kept a smile on her face. She loved working at Manning Place to Play, at Manning Elementary; she always looked forward to working with the children. She especially loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Shelby was preceded in death by her husband Clarence William Mann, Sr.

Surviving is her son, Billy Mann and wife, Amy, and Donald Crews, who was like a son, and his wife, Laurin, all of Roanoke Rapids; daughters, Karen Clark and husband, Wayne, of South Carolina, Connie Crews and Carolyn “Red” Boone, both of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Johnny Barber and sister, Bonnie Lou Scott and husband, Donnie, both of Victoria, VA; four special friends, Angie Baird from Gentiva Hospice, Kay Richmond, Tracy Pierce and Stan Harris. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Saturday, October 1, 2016, from 5-7 pm. Nelson High, CLS will conduct a graveside service in Cool Springs Christian Church Cemetery on Ontario Rd. in Keysville, VA Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 2:00 pm.

Gerald Wilson White, Sr. of Roanoke Rapids passed away on September 29, 2016.

A native of Halifax County, Gerald was born to the late Lettie Mozelle Game and Lucious Benjamin White.

Gerald served his country for 27 years in the U. S. Navy and also served during the Vietnam Conflict. He owned the Fairfax Dinner in Roanoke Rapids and sold Real Estate for many years.

Gerald is survived by his two sons, Gerald “Jerry” Wilson White, Jr. of VA Beach and Kevin White; his daughter, Brenda Michelle Hinners and her husband, Patrick of VA Beach; his eight grandchildren and one great grandchild; his sister, Margaret Pulley of Goose Creek, SC; and his three brothers, Fred White and his wife Wanda Dale of VA Beach, Wayne White and his wife Hazel of Roanoke Rapids and Ricky White and his wife Barbara (Ann) of Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Sheila Ann Cox Hux, 70, died at the home of her sister in Garysburg, Tuesday, October 4, 2016.

Sheila was born, May 4, 1946, in Halifax County to the late James Albert Cox and Margaret Moseley ReVeal.

She worked at Ralph’s BBQ for 24 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and she also loved to dance.

Sheila always put others first, but would take control of the kitchen where her specialties were coconut pie, pecan pie and sweet tea.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Brenda Kay Colston and brother, Vernon Charles ReVeal.
Surviving is her husband, Curtis Hux of the home; sons, Charles Ray Henley, Jr. and wife, Christina, of Ashland, KY, Terry Wayne Henley and wife, Valerie, and Tommy Davis Henley and wife, Vickie, both of Roanoke Rapids; sisters, Wanda Dale White and husband, Frederick, of Virginia Beach, VA, Marsha Fay Tegl of Garysburg, NC, Lila Frances Wright and Georgia Lynn Clay, both of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Ashley, Gina, Kelley, Matthew, Kristofer, Amanda, Dylan, Magen and Luke. Also surviving are 13 great grandchildren.

Michael Chad Greene, 41, died Friday, September 30, 2016, in Vidant Health Center, Greenville, NC.

Chad was born in Greensboro, NC, August 13, 1975, to Frankie and Patricia Chandler Greene.

Chad was a “big kid” at heart and loved all children, especially his own and he loved his family first and foremost. He loved the outdoors and sports. He was always playing baseball or softball and he loved fishing. Chad was one of the biggest Washington Redskins fans; if the Skins won, he would let you know about it…He was in the flooring business and loved his work and was one of the best. He was proud of the fact that he was able to learn from the best, his father, Pee Wee Greene.

Michael is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Otis Chandler and paternal grandparents, Frank and Maxine Greene.
Surviving is his wife, Jennifer Megan Greene; sons, Brayden Michael Greene, 8 years old, and Leland Daniel Trystan Greene, 7 years old, all of the home; parents, Frankie and Patricia Greene of Greensboro, NC; daughters, Makayla Jade Greene, 18 years old, of Arcadia, FL, Sky Greene, 13 years old, of Ararat, VA, Chloe LeeAnn Jones, 11 years old and Presley Elizabeth Greene, 1-year-old, both of the home; brothers, Mark Greene and Yancy Greene; maternal grandmother, Faye Chandler all of Greensboro, NC; niece, Gabby Greene. Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service, beginning at 1:30 pm and all other times at the home, 501 Harris St., Roanoke Rapids, NC. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids.
