Emily Biggs Hasty, age 87, of Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, January 21, 2018, at Magnolia Gardens Center, Warrenton, NC.

Mrs. Hasty was born in Halifax County. She formerly worked at J.P. Stevens Company.

Mrs. Hasty was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Thomas Hasty, mother, Mary Curles Biggs, and a son, Basil Johnson Jr.

She is survived by two sons, Donald C. Johnson, of Roanoke Rapids, Kevin Dewayne Johnson, of Jacksonville, NC; four daughters, Lisa Michelle Hollowich, Mary Catherine Johnson, of Wilmington, NC, Martha McConnahey, of Jacksonville, NC, Andrea Hasty Von Kaenel, of Colorado Springs, CO; brother, Baily Biggs; two sisters, Gloria Dawn Griffin, Ruth Nelson.

Edgar Lloyd Hargrave Sr.

Edgar Lloyd Hargrave Sr., age 86, of Littleton, NC, died Friday, January 19, 2018, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Northampton County, son of the late Edgar R. Hargrave and Bonnie E. Jordan Hargrave.

Edgar was a truck driver with Thurston Motor Lines and formerly worked with J.P. Stevens Company. He was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church.

Edgar was a craftsman, especially working with wood. He could repair about anything whether it be electrical, plumbing, or automotive. Edgar also served in the United States Marine Corps.

Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Patricia Campbell Hargrave; sons, Lloyd Hargrave, Jr. and his wife,Alison of Halifax, NC, Andrew D. Hargrave, Sr. and his wife, Ginger A., of Dinwiddie Co, VA, Steven B. Hargrave and his fiancée, Terri Smith, of Northampton Co, NC, David R. Hargrave, of Northampton Co, NC; brother, John Thomas Hargrave, of Northampton Co, NC; grandsons, Steven R. Hargrave, Joshua B. Hargrave, Andrew D. Hargrave Jr., Avery Hargrave, Benjamin Hargrave; granddaughters, Heather Hargrave Dunn, Molly Hargrave, Kristen Hargrave, Sydnee Hargrave.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, January 24, 2018 , in the Chapel of Wrenn, Clarke, & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Bob Clyde officiating.

Burial will follow in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Stephen Ray Little, age 32, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, January 20, 2018.

Stephen was born in Halifax County and formerly was a commercial truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James C. and Daisey S. Butler and his uncle, Dennis Butler.

Surviving are his mother, Sandra B. Little; uncle, James Butler Jr.; cousin, Brian Butler; great uncle, Billy Louis Butler; great Aunt, Linda Lewis; best friend, Josh Melton; numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2018, in the Chapel of Wrenn, Clarke, & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service with Stephen Melton officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following services.

Norman Andrew Shearin

Norman Andrew Shearin, age 80, of Gaston, NC, died Saturday, January 20, 2018, at his residence.

Mr. Shearin was born in Halifax County, son of the late Woodrow W. Shearin and Gertrude Bradley Shearin.

He was retired from the J.P. Stevens Company and was a member of Antioch Christian Church. He was an avid quail hunter and loved hunting for Native American artifacts, especially arrowheads.

Preceding Mr. Shearin in death was his brother, Carson Shearin.

Surviving are his daughters, Regina Shearin Barnes (John Jr.), of Gaston, Susan “Sue” Shearin, of Roanoke Rapids, Lori Robinson (Lester), of Clemmons, NC, Margaret “Margie” Esidro (Dion), of Shawboro, NC; brothers, William, Robert, and Roy Shearin; sisters, Ellen Shearin, Betty Harlow, and Bonnie Overton; grandchildren, Savannah and Courtlyn Barnes, Shannon Hall, Michelle Adams, Ryan Smiley, Brittany Segundo, Jarrett and Marena Robinson.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018, at Antioch Christian Church with Minister Mark Wethington officiating.

Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Bettie Clements Collier

Bettie Clements Collier, 87, of 740 Warner Bridge Road, Garysburg, passed peacefully Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Lawndale Manor Assisted Living Center in Garner, NC.

Collier

Bettie was born at home in the Beef Road Community in Greensville County, VA, December 1, 1930, to George Washington Clements and Effie Ella Rook.

She grew up on her father’s farm on the Beef Road.

She met Clayton Collier and they were married March 14, 1948. They moved to Warner Bridge Road where they would raise three sons and run the family farm for 69 years.

Bettie worked as a weaver for J.P. Stevens at both the River Mill and Rosemary Mill.

She enjoyed weaving and received the first award from J.P. Stevens for running an entire shift without a single second.

She enjoyed weaving and was very proud of that accomplishment.

She loved working with people and many people will remember her working as a waitress at Howard Johnson’s restaurant for many years. She ended her working career at Bayberry Retirement Inn.

Bettie and her husband Clayton joined their many friends to stop the Hazardous Waste Incinerator scheduled to be built in the area back in 1992.

Bettie served as President of the NCAP Board for several years and spent many hours lobbying in Raleigh and working with county and state representatives to protect the environment.  

She ran for Northampton County Commissioner in 1998 against a 30-year incumbent and was the first woman in Northampton County history to receive enough votes to earn a runoff.

Though she lost the runoff election, she was proud that she opened the door for other women to become involved and elected to public office in Northampton County.  

Her favorite hobbies were talking on the telephone with her friends, playing Dom Pedro card game with her family, reading the Daily Herald, and going to go-kart races and NASCAR races to see her sons drive.

She was a lifelong member of Forest Hill Baptist Church.  

Bettie is survived by her son Jerry Collier and companion Marie-Jose Taylor of Roanoke Rapids, her son Jeffrey Clayton Collier and his wife Cindy Thompson of Burlington, her son Joseph Michael Collier and companion Karen Conner of Wendell.

Bettie is also survived by one brother. Jimmy Clements of the Beef Road in Greensville County, VA,  three grandchildren, April Collier Stephens of Benson, Jeffrey Mark Collier and John Clayton Collier of Chesapeake, Va. Bettie has four great grandchildren: Abigail Bryana Stephens of Benson, Hayden Clayton Collier, Brenden Robert Collier, Mark Zabian Collier and Anthony Leland Collier all of Chesapeake, VA.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, January 26 at Forest Hill Baptist Church, 2103 Pine Logging Road, Skippers, VA. The Funeral Services will be held immediately after the Family Visitation at 1:30pm at the church. Rev Roger Collier and Rev Rick Ragen are officiating.

Burial will follow in the Collier Family Cemetery, 740 Warner Bridge Road in Garysburg.

Nira Jean Edwards Wright

Nira Jean Edwards Wright died Friday, January 26, 2018 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount. She was 83.

A native of Roanoke Rapids, she was the daughter of the late Ray Marion Edwards and Sarah Jeanette Wright Edwards.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Robert Wright Jr.

Nira was a faithful Christian, a beloved mother, and a cherished friend to many.

She was a longtime member of First Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids where she taught Sunday school for many years.

Nira enjoyed playing cards regularly with her “card girls,” but mostly she loved her family and being “Nana” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Nira is survived by her children, Robert Timothy Wright of Wilson and Susan Wright Horrell of Roanoke Rapids; three sisters, Peggy Ann Edwards of Nashville, Linda Ray Edwards of Wilson, and Gail Edwards Wallace of Nashville; a brother, William Mason Edwards and his wife Carol of Littleton; grandchildren, Lauren Horrell Bunn and her husband Mitch, and Benjamin Randall Horrell, Jr.; great grandchildren, Jordan Elizabeth Bunn, Molly Caroline Bunn, and Thomas Mitchell “Trey” Bunn, III.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, January 29, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Chapel with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the time of the service, and other times at 152 Devonshire Circle in Roanoke Rapids.

Hubert Earl Baggett, 79, died at his home Friday, January 26, 2018, in Jackson.

Mr. Baggett was born in Bertie County, May 30, 1938, to the late Cornelius Washington and Lucy Blowe Baggett.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Baggett was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Claude Baggett and his sisters, Lois Lowe and Evelyn Snipes.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Elma C. Baggett of the home; son, Pat Baggett of Scotland Neck and his daughter, Connie Wells and husband, Hugh, of Jackson. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Ashley Wells Spradlin and husband, Wesley, and Cody Wells.

The family will receive friends at Askew Funeral Services, Jackson Chapel Monday, January 29, 2018, from 7-8:30 pm.

Rev. Robert Johnson will conduct graveside services Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at 2:00 pm in Jackson Cemetery.

The North Carolina Department of Corrections will provide honors.

RICH SQUARE, NC – William Bruce “Billy” Howerton, Jr. (Pepper), age 54, of Lasker, passed away on January 26, 2018 at his residence.

Billy was born on May 29, 1963 to William Bruce Howerton, Sr. and Sue Britton Howerton in Ahoskie, NC. Later making his home in Rich Square, better known to him as Possum Hollow. He worked as a supervisor for Kennametal for 27 years before retiring. Billy was a man of nature farming part time, hunting, fishing, just being outdoors. He enjoyed being with his family and showed his love to all. Billy spent as much time as possible on his bike, being a member of the three charters of the Free Riders Motorcycle Club of Northampton County, Roanoke Rapids, and Askewville. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by parents, his MeMa that raised him, Doris Britton and PePa Dallas Britton.

Billy is survived by his loving wife, Wanda, step-mother, Lillian Martin Howerton; son, William Benjamin “Ben” Howerton “Sprout”; daughter, Shannon Marie Harrell and husband William, Jr. of Grandy, NC; brother, Christopher E. “Chris” Howerton and wife Phyllis; two sisters, Donna Jones and friend Wilton Strickland, and Denise Miles and husband William; uncle, Gene Audrey Britton; two nieces, Carolyn Marie Howerton, and Jessica Hope Douglas and husband Parker of Bessemer City, NC; nephew, Christpher C. “Stump” Howerton; best friend Curtis James. Also surviving are numerous extended family and many family members from Tennessee.

The family would like to thank the AP III% American Patriots for their contribution of the casket that they specially made for their brother who was a very honored member of the AP III%.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 1, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Garrett~Sykes Funeral Service, Rich Square, NC with burial to follow at his residence.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family to help with unexpected expenses.

William Perry Mincher, 81, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Nash County to the late William Seth and Ethel Smith Mincher.

William was preceded in death by his two sisters, Irma Griffin and Dot Pittman; his two brothers, Syntell Mincher and Ollie Mincher.

He retired from Amerigas after many years of service to the company.

William is survived by his companion, Faye Dunlow of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his three sons, Steve Mincher and his wife Robin of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Greg Mincher and his wife, Esther of Rocky Mount, NC, and Tony Mincher of Rocky Mount, NC; his eight grandchildren, Adam Mincher and his wife Kathryn, Nicholas Mincher, Jessica Mincher, William Mincher, Samuel Mincher, Christopher Mincher, Bodie Mincher and Jenna Mincher and also his two great-grandchildren, Meredith Mincher and Madisyn Mincher.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate William’s life will be held in the Chapel of Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, NC, on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

James Adam Tucker, 74, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Vidant Medical Center Greenville, NC.

James was born in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late David Walters Tucker and Cora Stokes Tucker.

He was the former owner and operator of Tucker’s Tree Service, until his retirement.

His Grandmother Alice Stokes, two sisters, Florence and Marion and six brothers, Charlie, Texas, Gene, Robert, George and Spence, also preceded James in death.

Surviving are: his wife, Leigh Whitby Tucker; two daughters, Sheri Tucker and fiancée Laurie Allman of Greensboro, NC; Alexandra T. Turner and her husband Darren of Roanoke Rapids, NC; two sons, Mark Tucker and his wife Kim of Weldon, NC, and Jimmy Tucker and his wife Sharon, of Roanoke Rapids, NC; two sisters, Alice Seal and JoAnn Gray both of Virginia; four grandchildren, Christopher, Angel, Brittany and Anisten.

Graveside services will be held in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids, NC, Friday, February 2, 2018, at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Bruce Wayne Marshall officiating.

Lutitia “Tish” Warsham,  63, of Roanoke Rapids, died  Sunday, January 28, 2018, at Vidant Medical Center, Greenvillle, NC.

Tish was born in Onslow County, NC, the daughter of the late Ervin D. Warsham and Charlene Baldwin Warsham. She was a former dental assistant.

Surviving are two sons, Robert “Rob” Barbee Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, of Winterville, NC, Frederick Daniel Barbee, of Greenville, NC; two grandchildren, Lawson and Langston Barbee; a half brother and various step siblings.

Robert Alvin Harper

Robert Alvin Harper went to be with his Lord on Jan. 30, 2018, after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born Feb. 26, 1942, to Albert Harper and Pansy Wilson Harper Hasty.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Retha Pilgreen; step-dad, Clinton Hasty; and a niece, Linda Burris.

Alvin was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees.  

He especially enjoyed the men’s breakfast and helping cook the stews.   

He was a true outdoorsman and was a long time member of Faison Hunting Club.  

On Thursday nights he would go to Seven Sports Hunting Club to enjoy a meal and fellowship.  Alvin always had a large garden so he could share vegetables with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Vickey; his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Tiffany; 2 granddaughters, Courtney (Chris), and Casey (Thomas); adopted granddaughter, Sarah Daugherty; and brother, Timmy Hasty.

In honor of his memory, the family requests that any person that would like, to wear camouflage to his celebration of life service  which will be held at 11:00 am Saturday at New Hope United Methodist Church.  

Visitors may greet the family from 10:00 – 10:45 am Saturday at the church, and at other times at the residence.

Bernice May Osburn

Bernice passed away Monday night, Jan. 29, 2018 in Roanoke Rapids.

She was born May 12, 1926, in Pleasant Hill, Tenn.

She was the daughter of Hunter and Gladys Bradbury and was the oldest of six children.

She moved to Akron, Ohio, during WWII to work in a factory.

She married Russell E. Osburn and raised two sons there and then moved to North Carolina after they both retired.

She made many friends in Roanoke Rapids and they all called her Grandma.

She was a loving wife, mother and Grandmother. She loved her many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell E. Osburn, son Garry D. Osburn Sr., brothers Charles and Samuel Bradbury.

She is survived by her son Raymond and wife Cathy Osburn. Daughter in law Brenda Osburn. Granddaughters Dawn DeMuesy (husband Todd) and Starr Osburn. Grandson Garry D.

Osburn Jr (wife Heather). Great grandsons Jacob and Mitchell DeMuesy, Garry D. Osburn III and Austin Osburn. Great granddaughter Brandi Osburn. Sisters Betty Kemmer, Doris (husband Carson) Pharris and Harriet Coe.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Thursday Feb. 1, 2018, at Wrenn Clarke and Hagan Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids.

Mrs. Bettie Wright Dixon, 89, of Roanoke Rapids died February 1, 2018 in her home.

A Halifax County native, she was born September 27, 1928 to Johnny Givens Wright and Patsy Lynch Wright.

Bettie worked in sales most of her career.  She enjoyed cooking and working puzzles, and love spending timewith her grandchildren. Bettie was a member of First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Johnson; grandchildren, Ashley Brown, Bryan Johnson and David Johnson, Jr.; great-grandchild, Ryland Brown; brother, John Wright; sister, Shirley Wright. In addition to her parents, and her husband Arthur Lee Dixon, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy.
The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1:30 pm Sunday afternoon at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.   

The funeral service will be conductedby Pastor Rick Gaskins at 2 pm Monday in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service. 

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

J. Charles 'Chaz' Laughon Jr.

J. Charles  “Chaz” Laughon Jr., age 63, of  Wilmington, NC, and formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday, January 26, 2018, at New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington. 

Chaz was born in Raleigh and raised in Roanoke Rapids where he graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School. 

He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Degree in Business and furthered his education receiving a Degree in Religion and Philosophy from UNC Wilmington.

Chaz was a gifted musician, proficient in many instruments, but he was primarily a songwriter and vocalist of the highest level. 

He was involved in the movie industry and some well known productions such as Cold Mountain, Safe Haven, The Choice and Leatherheads.

Preceding him in death was his father, J. Charles Laughon,Sr.

Chaz is survived his mother, Myrt Laughon New, of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Dr. Pamela Laughon, of UNC Asheville; nephew, Jeremy Graham, of Univ. of Notre Dame.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Wilmington to benefit Chaz’s many musician friends and others stricken with cancer.

Patricia (Pat) Jenkins Harrell, 68, of Weldon, NC, died Friday, February 2, 2018, at Wake Medical Center, in Raleigh, NC.

Mrs. Harrell was born in Nash County, NC, the daughter of the late Clifton Jenkins and Pattie Coggins Jenkins Casper. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Crystal Lee Harrell. 

Patricia loved children, her family and the Lord. She operated a Daycare for years and loved teaching.

Surviving are: her husband M. Lee Harrell; two daughters, Doris Driver and her husband Kevin and Julie Bryant and her husband Mark, all of Roanoke Rapids, NC; two sisters, Ann Hyman of Tarboro, NC, and Brenda Baird and her husband Reggie of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a brother Gene Jenkins of Scotland Neck, NC; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Alex, Shelly, Alen Michael, Shannon and Cody; four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Trinity, Kaylan and Jason.

A memorial service will be held at Valley Community Church, 1215 Julian R. Allsbrook Highway, Weldon, NC, Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at 2:00 PM, with Rev. David Schmaltz and Rev. Tom Johnson officiating. 

The family will receive at the church for one hour prior to the services.

Ms. Mattie Jean Gibson, 77, formerly of Weldon died February 1, 2018 at Highland House in Fayetteville.

She was born January 11, 1941, in Halifax County, the daughter of Harry Lee and Ethel Walters Gibson.  

Mattie Jean loved playing sports, especially basketball and softball.  She enjoyed coffee and cappuccino, and was an avid fan of both the NC State Wolfpack and the Atlanta Braves. 

She was a retired seamstress from JP Stevens.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Lisa Gibson of Fayetteville; sisters, Mary Garoutte of Aurora, MO, Lillian Merritt of Roanoke Rapids and Polly Gibson of Darlington; brothers, Bob Melton Gibson of Roanoke Rapids and Clinton Howard Gibson of Hayes, VA; several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Albert Lee, Frank, Rex Bell and Dottie Gibson; and sisters, Beanie Sadler and Mildred Allen.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service on Tuesday from 12 noon until 1:30 pm.   

A graveside service will follow at 2 pm Tuesday in Crestview Memorial Park.

Kenneth Wayne Simmons, age 55, originally of Emporia, Virginia, went home to his Heavenly Father on February 4, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Sam Simmons, stepdad Bobby Clark, brother Calvin Simmons and sister Linda Newsome.Kenneth is survived by his wife Pamela Simmons, son Gavin Simmons, daughters Mary Carlson (fiancé Bradley Berardo), and Kala Carlson. His mother Grace Clark, brothers Sammy Simmons, Donnie Simmons (wife Tammy), Billy Simmons, Bruce Simmons (wife Teresa), and sister Tammy Simmons (husband Gerald). Also, his many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at Lebanon United Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Bob Clyde and Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Spring United Methodist Church Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends at the church from Noon until 1:00 P.M.
