Ronnie Lawrence 'Ron' Vest

Ronnie Lawrence “Ron” Vest 65 of Lake Gaston died Thursday July 18, 2013 at his Home.

Ron a native of Roanoke Virginia was the son of the late Samuel Barnard and Sadie Ellen Whiteneck Vest. He was preceded in death by his brother Nelson Vest.

Ron served his Country in the National Guard and was retired from the Norfolk Southern Railway Corp. After moving to Lake Gaston he started working in real estate and was working with Waterfront Properties.

Ron is survived by his wife Bonnie Albert Vest; daughters Amy V. Poole and her husband Ray of Littleton and Leslie Holcomb and her husband David of Jarrett, Va.; his grand children Landen , Emerson, Hunter and Chase; his brother Gerald B. Vest  of Check, Va.; his sister-in-law Nancy S. Vest of Copper Hill, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held Saturday July 20, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Kevin Brunk officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30 until service time at the Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Heart Association 3015 S. Memorial Dr. Greenville, NC 27834


Judith Minerva Moseley

Judith Minerva Moseley age 71 of Roanoke Rapids passed away on July 16, 2013 at Halifax Regional Medical Center. Judith was born January 4, 1942 in Halifax County North Carolina the daughter of the late Edward June King and Lillian Wallace King. She was also preceded in death by her husband Charles Oliver Moseley, Jr. and a son Richard Oliver Moseley.

Survivors include her two daughters Marie Luevano of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Diane Verrelli and husband Jimmy of Georgia. Her one son Edward Charles Moseley of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Her five grandchildren Raelene Hernandez, Melissa Luevano, Michael Verrelli, Debrah Verrelli and Rachel Verrelli. Her five great-grandchildren Julee, Arys, Karra, Jayden and Emma. Her two brothers William Shaw of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Jerry Shaw of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Her two sisters Peggy Shearin and son Michael and daughter Donna all of Roanoke Rapids and Charlotte Register of Virginia.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Judith Moseley will be held Friday, July 19, 2013 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Dennis Joyner officiating.

The family will receive friends at 2121 Rebecca St. Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mr. Luther Wheeler, age 91 of Severn, NC passed away Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Pine Forest Rest Home in Potecasi, NC.

Mr. Wheeler was born November 23, 1921 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Jack Wheeler and Gertrude Davis Wheeler. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Madeline N. Wheeler, his son, Jackie L. Wheeler; his brother Thomas Wheeler, and sisters Flossie Mae Outland, Margaret Wilkie, and Emma Lee Murray.

Mr. Wheeler was a faithful member of Severn Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Malinda K. Wheeler of Nairobi, Kenya and her husband Tewolde Gebremeskel Woldu and their daughter Dagmawit; four grandchildren, Kimberly Elaine Fresen, Wendy Juanita Marie Srivastava, Chadwick Conard Wheeler, and Dagmawit Tewolde; and one sister Myrtle Gwaltney of Hampton Virginia.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Severn Baptist Church in Severn, NC.

Burial will follow at Severn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church two hours prior to services beginning at 12 noon.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pine Forest Rest Home, Potecasi, NC.

Linda Miller

Linda Miller, 61 of Lake Gaston, Littleton, NC died Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Linda was a hairdresser at Maria’s Hairstyling, Michael’s Hair Studio on Lake Gaston and later worked at Studio One in Roanoke Rapids, NC.  She faithfully attended Marantha Baptist Church

She is survived by her brother: Roger Flemings and wife Beverly of Belton, SC; her aunt: Cornelia Davis of Pelzer, SC; a special cousin: Diane Elders and husband Don of Greer, SC; other cousins: Cathey Ellis of Greer, SC, Gerald and Cindy Davis of Belton, SC, Frankie and Barbara Davis of Williamston, SC and John and Melinda Davis of Abbeville, SC ; and a special friend: Bob Andrews of Lake Gaston; and her beloved dog Ursula Yohanna.

A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Chockoyotte Baptist Church with Rev. Henry Stephens and Rev. Mike Little officiating.

Gilbert Blake Jenkins Sr.

Mr. Gilbert Blake Jenkins Sr., age 66 of Rich Square, NC died suddenly Friday, July 19, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Jenkins was born July 22, 1946 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Russell Gilbert Jenkins and Lillian Bryant Jenkins. He was also predeceased by a sister Evelyn Jenkins and a grandchild Casey Lee Jenkins. He was a US Army Veteran and served his country during the Vietnam War. He was retired from International Paper Company in Franklin, VA after forty years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Brenda Broglin Jenkins. His children, Gilbert Blake Jenkins Jr. and his wife Crystal of Eure, NC, Johnny Russell Jenkins of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Jenny Lynn Williams and her husband Johnny of Washington, NC and Mary Katherine Pierce of Rich Square, NC. Two sisters, Connie Robertson of Edenton, NC and Bernice Umphlett of Ahoskie, NC. Seven grandchildren, Hope, Steven, Kelly, Dean, Elizabeth, Blake and Matthew. One great granddaughter, Journie.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 11:00 AM

at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square, NC with Rev. Robert Barmer officiating.

Tempie Joyner Chenoweth 82, of Roanoke Rapids died Friday July 19, 2013 with her loving family by her side.

Tempie a native of Nash County was the daughter of the late Jethro David and Inez Elizabeth Smith Joyner.

Tempie was a dedicated wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She loved cooking and making anything with her hands.

She is survived by her loving husband Bobbie Chenoweth; daughters Pam Gregory and her husband Mark of Greensboro; Karen Mueller and her husband Tom of Greensboro and Lori Bagwell and her husband Woody of Winterville; son Bill Herbert of Portsmouth, Va.; step daughters Page Watson and her husband Gil of Roanoke Rapids and Cathy Chenoweth of Pikeville; step son Buzz Chenoweth and his wife Martha of Wake Forest; sister Peggy Dickens of Rocky Mount; 17 grand children and 17 great grand children.

Funeral Service will be held Monday at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation service with Rev. Todd Stout officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Mae Sledge Kennedy

Mrs. Mae Sledge Kennedy, 87, of Roanoke Ave. died Monday, July 22nd, 2013 at her home.  Mrs. Kennedy was born March 27, 1926 in Northampton County to the late Sidney and Eunice Barkley Sledge. 

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by three brothers Edward, Lawrence, and Wilson Sledge and a granddaughter Christy Parks.  Mrs. Kennedy worked for a number of years at J.P. Stevens, Blanchard Mills in Whitakers, and she also provided services as a private duty sitter.

 

Mrs. Kennedy is survived by two daughters Virginia Parks and husband Larry and Jean McGee and husband John, III all of Roanoke Rapids; and a son John Finch, Jr.  She is also survived by three grandchildren; Chase and Corey McGee and Joanie Parks and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 25th, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Spring United Methodist Church Cemetery in Skippers, Va. with Rev. Wayne White officiating.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:15 PM at the funeral home prior to the service and other  times at the home.

Garrett Nelson Brooks died Sunday, July 21, 2013. 

He was born in Richmond, VA and moved to Roanoke Rapids with his family in 1990.

Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by his mother: Donna Nelson Brooks.

Mr. Brooks is survived by his wife: Sarah Crawley Brooks; his daughter: Caitlyn Joy Brooks both of Rice, VA; his father: Bryant R. Brooks; his stepmother: Valerie S. Brooks; his sister: Ashley L. Brooks all of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; two maternal grandparents: Mr. & Mrs. E.W. Nelson of Meherrin, VA; his paternal grandmother: Jean H. Brooks of Greenville, SC.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 25 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Roanoke Rapids.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in his memory to the All Saints Food Pantry or The Union Mission of Roanoke Rapids.

Patsy Mason Ward Warren 82, of Littleton died Monday evening at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Patsy was born in Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Fentrice Emerson and Grace Mohorn Ward.  She was a faithful member of Bear Swamp Baptist Church and was retired from the Halifax county schools after 28 years of service.

Patsy is survived by her husband George W. Warren; their daughter Charlotte W. Lewis and her husband Dick of Morehead City; their son’s Steve Warren and his wife Ellen of Rocky Mount and Tim Warren and his wife Sarah of Raleigh; six grand children Corey Lewis and his wife Sarah, Allison Hodges and her husband Christopher, Garrett Warren, Erin Warren, Ward Warren and his wife Emily and Reid Warren; three great grand children Estella Lewis, Trent Lewis and Bridger Hodges; sister-in-laws Faye Gay of Clinton; Sarah Warren of Littleton and Martha Warren of Fayetteville; several nieces and nephews and a special friend Virginia Lynch.

The family would like to thank Dr. Doug Boyette, Lynn Bradshaw, Melinda Lynch and Hospice Palliative Care of Nash General Hospital.

Funeral Service will be held Thursday July 25, 2013 at Bear Swamp Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Howard Guidry officiating.

Burial will follow in the church Cemetery.

Janey P. Ellen a long time resident of Jackson North Carolina passed away July 25, 2013 into her Lord and Saviors heavenly arms.

Born March 5, 1933 she was the daughter of the late Alex Pitt and Sarah Pitt.

She was surrounded by her daughters, their husbands and all of her grandchildren that loved her dearly.

She served her work years as Assistant Register of Deeds, Register of Deeds and Veterans Officer in Northampton County and was a member of the Jackson Baptist Church.

Janey was the widow of Sidney T. Ellen and is survived by her daughters Callie Ellen and Agatha Knab, Son in-laws Richard Moore and Darryl Knab, Grandchildren, Duane Knab, Waylon Knab, Farrah Knab and Lacee Moore.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 2:30 PM at Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson, NC Burial will follow at the family cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 until 2:30 PM at Jackson Baptist Church, prior to services.

Roanoke Rapids resident Joseph “Jody” Heber Jolly Jr., 64, died July 26, 2013, at Halifax Regional Hospital in Roanoke Rapids, NC. 

A visitation will be held at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, NC, at 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Sunday July 28, 2013.

A celebration of his life will be presided over by the Rev. Tommy Sweely at Rosemary United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC, at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 29, 2013, with Masonic Rites.

Jody was born Dec. 31, 1948, in Roanoke Rapids, NC, to Joseph H. Sr. and Ethel K. Jolly.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Brenda M. Jolly, and his three daughters, Misty Jolly-Lewis and husband James Lewis of Sault Saint Marie, MI; April Roach and husband Alan Roach of Rocky Mount, NC; and Stacey Jolly-Lassiter and husband William Lassiter of Raleigh, NC; and seven grandchildren Adrien Lewis, Sarah Grace Roach, Joseph Roach, Ian Lewis, Chloe Lassiter, Megan Lewis, and Katie Lassiter and two sisters Betty K. and husband James Earl Perkinson, of Suffolk, VA; and Lydia and husband Jack Morgan of Greenville, NC; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, friends, and family.

He was a loving husband, father, and granddaddy.  Jody was a devoted member of Rosemary United Methodist Church.  Jody never met a stranger and enjoyed making people’s day by making them laugh.  He also loved raising cattle on his farm with his loyal dog Maggie.

Ronald Lee Hollowell, 72, died Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Roanoke Rapids Health Care & Rehabilitation Center.

He was a dispatcher for Dominion North Carolina Power for over 29 years. He served his country in the U. S. Army and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was born December 4, 1940, to the late John Rupert Hollowell and Louise Parker Hollowell Hux. Also preceding him in death was his wife, Mary Ellen Powell Hollowell, and his brothers, John, Jr. Paul, David and William Hollowell.

He is survived by his son, Ronald Lee Hollowell, Jr., his daughter, Teresa H. Curry, and husband, Charles; his brothers: Haywood Hollowell and wife, Brenda, and Cola Hollowell and wife, Carol, all of Roanoke Rapids; his sister: Francis Hollowell Twisdale, of Hampton, Virginia; his grandchildren: Jennifer Rollinson and husband, Jim, and Bryan Curry, and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at Crestview Memorial Cemetery on Monday, July 29, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. conducted by Pastor Michael Jones.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7 – 9 P.M. at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service which is handling the arrangements.

O.B. Overton

O.B. Overton of Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday July 28, 2013.

O.B. a native of Scotland Neck was the son of the late Robert L. and Emma Sue Edwards Overton. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen Gay Overton, a daughter Patricia Overton Irby, his sister Jean Ellington and two brothers, Bennie and Harry Overton.

He served his Country in the United States Army during WWII and was also in the National Guard for over thirty years. He was a member of South Rosemary United Methodist Church. He was a Mason and member of window’s son lodge #519 and also a member of the Eastern Star. O.B. was a charter member of the Davie Volunteer fire Department.

O.B. is survived by his daughter Barbara O. Myrick and her husband David of Roanoke Rapids; grand- sons David Myrick, II of Louisburg and Chad Myrick and his wife Beth of Midlothian, Va.; grand- daughter DeNisa Husser and her husband Jeff of Raleigh; five great grand children Lauren, David III, Cameron, Morgan and Connor.

Funeral Service will Thursday August 1, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with CLM Nelson High officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 at the Funeral home.

Beverly Murphy, 58, of Powell’s Point, NC died Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.   

Born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, she was the daughter of Herman Newsome and Ruby Davis Newsome and the Wife of Joseph Wayne Murphy. Ms. Murphy was a Networking Switching Technician.

She is survived by two daughters; Sue Ann Maughmer and Husband, Major and Crystal Ward and Husband, Bill, both of Chillicothe, OH; Four sisters; Ruby Ann Hudgins and Husband, Bradford of Concord, NC, Alice Gray and Husband Morris of Harbinger, NC, Joy Harrington and Husband, Mike of Dinwiddie, VA, and Margaret Pinney of Wake Forest, NC and a Brother;   “HD” Newsome of Littleton, NC, and nine grandchildren.

 

A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 10:00am at Grandy Assembly of God with the Rev. Steven King officiating. Burial will take place in the Newsome Family Cemetery. Stephen Thomas Hill age 57 of Paragould, Arkansas and formerly of Garysburg, NC died suddenly in Ripley County, Missouri.

Stephen was born February 24, 1956 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the son of the late Frank Stephenson Hill and Elizabeth Gray Hill. He was also predeceased by a brother, Mark Hill.

He is survived by his fiancé Katheryn Newton.His children, Brent Hill of Roanoke Rapids and Jessica Hill of Sanford, NC. His brother,Freddie Hill and his wife Viola of Garysburg.His sisters, Betty Lou Zusin of Charlotte, NC and Mary Jo Edwards and her husband Mark of Sanford, NC.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held, Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Hill officiating.

Mrs. Betty Louise Lassiter Hurdle, age 87 died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Hurdle was born April 21, 1926 in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Carlton Lassiter and Meddie Outland Lassiter. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Keith Hurdle.

She is survived by her son, Jimmy Hurdle and his wife Gaila of Aulander, NC. Her grandson, Rev. Greg Hurdle. A sister-in-law, Lula Lassiter and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Hurdle officiating.Burial will follow at Job Cemetery.

Doris Abrams Wilson

Mrs. Doris Abrams Wilson, age 85 formerly of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away July 30, 2013 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.

Doris was born April 10, 1928 in Wilson County North Carolina, the daughter of the late Edgar Paul Abrams and Mattie Virginia Hughes Abrams. She was also preceded in death by her husband Calvin Wilson. 

Doris worked many years in Roanoke Rapids for W.R. Grace Company.

Survivors include her two daughters Patricia Koski (Robert) of Mooresville, NC and Sheila Skelton (Dennis) of Huntersville, NC; A son George Martin Kellis (Marsha) of Tallahassee, Florida; Five grandchildren Cynthia Stowe, Tonya Demott, Jason Wright, Carrie Wright and Jack Kellis; Six great-grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter and a very special friend Ada Godsey.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 2, 2013 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. David Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Doris Edwards Lewis 91, of Roanoke Rapids died Friday August 2, 2013.

Doris a native of Roanoke Rapids was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Iva Brewer Edwards. She was also preceded in death by her husband Max Gardner Lewis, Sr. her sister’s Edith Harris and Mary Edwards and brothers Daniel and Rudolph Edwards and her daughter-in-law Gail Lewis.

Doris was an avid bridge player. She enjoyed traveling with her husband in their retirement years and was a Member of Rosemary United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son Max Gardner Lewis, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids; grandsons Brooks Lewis of Greenville and Brad Lewis of Roanoke Rapids; her sister Lucille Weiss and her husband Bobby of Roanoke Rapids and Several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held Monday at 3:00 P.M. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Jim Bell officiating.

The Family will receive friends Monday from 1:30-2:45 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids and other times at her sons home 106 Valley Dr Roanoke Rapids.

William Bret Wrenn

William Bret Wrenn, of Roanoke Rapids formerly of Knightdale died Saturday August 3, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.

Bret was a native of Halifax County, the son of Edward Mason and Josephine “Jo” Garner Wrenn.  He was a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, Class of 1979.  Bret worked his entire career, beginning in 1980, with Schneider Electric in Knightdale, NC.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Price Wrenn.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Kim Edwards and her husband, Ray, and Tracy Kidd and her husband, Bill, all of Roanoke Rapids; his brother, Mike Wrenn and his wife, Deanna, of Tampa, FL; five nephews; two nieces; four great-nieces; and one great-nephew.

Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends Monday from 7:-8:30.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2:00  at Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin and Rev. Mike Wrenn officiating.  Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
