Ann Arthur Harris

Ann Arthur Harris, 81 of Roanoke Rapids died Monday, August 5, 2013 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Harris was born August 14, 1931 in Greene County, North Carolina to the late Joseph Arthur and Lydie Turnage Arthur.  She was also preceded in death by her sister: Doris Arthur; her brother: Joe Harper Arthur.

She was a member of First Christian Church where she sang in the church choir. She was also an avid seamstress, loved cooking and playing the piano .  Mrs. Harris loved being a mama, was a superb wife and loved her family, she loved everyone she met, never met a stranger and never had any enemies.  She lived by the golden rule.

She is survived by her husband; Alfred S. “Vic” Harris of the home; her sons: Alfred S. “Al” Harris of Charlotte, NC and David Todd Harris of Roanoke Rapids; her daughter: Kimberly Harris Brandon and her husband James of Hattiesburg, MS; her brother: Albert Arthur of Snow Hill, NC; three grandchildren: Caithlyn O. Harris, Christopher Ryan Harris and Kyle Alexander Harris.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, August 9, 2013 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Bane Angles, Minister officiating.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 P.M. – 1:30 P.M. prior to the service and other times at the home.

Virginia Dare Bryant McCrimmon, 83, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013.

Virginia is a Halifax County native and was born on September 22, 1929 to Ruth Estelle Barnes Bryant and Floyd Anderson Bryant.

She was a graduate of the class of 1947 from Roanoke Rapids High School.

She retired from North Carolina Power in 1991 with 43 years of service and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke Rapids.

She is preceded in death by her husband John Russell McCrimmon and her brother, Earl A. Bryant, Sr. She is survived by her nephew, Earl A. (Andy) Bryant, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids; a niece, Claudia Ruth Bryant and a Sister in Law, Cynthia P. Bryant, both of Asheville, NC.

The family will receive friends Friday, August 9, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services and other times at the home of her nephew, Andy Bryant, 235 Oakwood Avenue, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

 

Officiating will be Rev. Randy Martin. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.

Margaret Pierce Cox, 89, died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Pinewood Manor in Ahoskie.

Mrs. Cox was born in Halifax County June 29, 1924, to the late William Pierce and Icelene Pierce.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, John D. Cox; a son, John D. Cox, II; son-in-law, Mike France, and granddaughter, Jennifer Andrews.    

Surviving is her son, William N. “Bill” Cox and wife, Teresa, of Spring Grove, VA and two daughters, Paula France of Roanoke Rapids, and Margo Saunders, and husband, Chuck, of Jacksonville, FL..  Also surviving is five grandchildren, Mickey Doane, William N. “Nash” Cox, Tracey F. Brake, John P. “Jody” France, and John D. “Denny” Cox. III, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 13, 2013 in Cedarwood Cemetery at 2:00 pm.  A visitation will be held prior to the graveside service beginning at 12:30-:1:30 pm at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service. Other times the family will meet at Mrs. France’s house at 2210 Bolling Rd., Roanoke Rapids.

William 'Bill' L. Atkinson

William “Bill” L. Atkinson age 93, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2013.

 

Mr. Atkinson was a former resident of Jackson, NC.

He was born in Ellerson, VA on March 18, 1920, the son of the late William and Lula Atkinson. He was also predeceased by his wife Alma Parker Atkinson and his step grandson Mark Owens.

During World War II, he served with the Army 82nd Airborne Glider Division and fought in the Rhineland Central Europe Campaign.

He received a WW II Victory Medal. After service he worked for many years with Capital Concrete, Norfolk, VA as a crane operator. He retired to North Carolina where he used his carpentry skills doing home remodeling projects.

Bill was a member of Galatia Baptist Church.

He is survived by his stepchildren, Brenda Archer (Kenneth) of Jackson, NC, Linda Owens (Will) of Falls Church, VA , Billy Parker (Cheryl) of Virginia Beach, VA and Gene Parker, his sister, Mildred Sanderson and nephew Ronnie Sanderson (Jenny) all of Richmond, VA. Six grandchildren include, Wendy Pierce (James of South Riding, VA, Jennifer Downs (Brian) of Locust Grove, VA, Scarlet Floyd (Dennis) of Chesapeake, VA, Chad Parker (Meagan) of Virginia Beach, VA and Angela Parker of Virginia Beach, VA. His great grandchildren are Dalton and Tyler Downs, Ashlee Owens, Ayden and Colin Floyd and Kayleigh Parker.

Graveside services will be held Monday, August 5, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery with Rev. David Foster officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Sunday August 4, 2013 from 4:00 until 5:30 PM.

Arrangements are being handled Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

Raymond Grays Turner Sr.

Mr. Raymond Grays Turner, Sr., age 85 of Jackson, NC died Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Turner was born October 18, 1927 in Branchville, VA, the son of the late Henry Thomas Turner and Mary Lamb Turner. 

He was also predeceased by his wife Clara Bell Turner and two sons Raymond G. Turner, Jr. and John Thomas Turner. Raymond farmed for many years.

Survivors include his son Jack Turner (Debra) of Newsomes, VA. A daughter-in-law Johnnie Turner of Jackson, NC. Three brothers Donald “Frog” Turner of Florida, Charlie “Buck” Turner of Severn, NC and Tommy Turner of Stony Creek, VA. His grandchildren Gray & Michelle, John & Teri, Shelby & Doug, Lucas & Amanda, Tonya and Tammy. His great-grandchildren Raymond IV, Amanda, Nikki, Brittney, Daniel, Jackson, Eric and G.W. His great great-grandchildren Gabin, Carter, Easton and Eli. A special son Nelson Poole.

Funeral services will be held, Thursday August 15, 2013 at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC which is handling the arrangements with Rev. Dennis Gregory, Jr. officiating. 

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 14, 2013 from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Bradley “Brad” Michael Denning age 30 of Roanoke Rapids, NC died Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice Center in Greenville, NC.

Brad was born January 31, 1983 in Fredericksburg, VA.

He worked at Logan’s Steak House in Roanoke Rapids. He loved music and enjoyed playing his guitar.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dianne Burgess Denning.

He is survived by his father, George Denning. His sister, Jennifer Conner and her husband Chris. His brother Jeremy Denning and his wife Lori. His nieces and nephews, Hayden Conner, Allessa Conner, Nathan Denning and Trent Denning. Also many friends.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate Brad’s Life will be held, Saturday,

August 17, 2013 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Judith “ Judy “ Lyles Dixon, 71 of Marietta, Ga. passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2013.

Judy was a native of Roanoke Rapids was the daughter of the late Curtis Elvin and Elsie Warrick Lyles and was also preceded in death by her grandparents and many aunts and uncles.

Judy was a graduate of Hampton High School, Hampton, Va. She was a loving Mother and grandmother.

She had a caring Christian heart. She loved sewing, genealogy, scrapbooking, watching her grandson play baseball, spending time with her granddaughter and attending women’s ministry bible studies at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Marietta, Ga.

Judy is survived by her daughter, Robin Dixon of Marietta, Ga., daughter Terry Dixon Gibeau and her husband Wayne of Flowery Branch, Ga.; grandchildren Dylan Curtis Gibeau and Ashlyn Brooke Gibeau ; sister, Kaye Lyles Pruitt and her husband Paul of Carrollton, Va.; brother-cousin Greg Radcliffe and his wife Elizabeth of Germantown, TN.; niece Hillary Ketterman of Spokane, WA.; six great-nieces and a multitude of cousins, relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held Monday August 17, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Charlotte Meadows Miles Williams

Charlotte Meadows Miles Williams, 68, of the Darlington Community passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013 at her home.  

Mrs. Williams was born June 12, 1945 in Halifax County to the late Claude E. Meadows, Sr. and Ella Fisher Meadows.  

Mrs. Williams was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.  She was a member of Community Center Baptist Church and was loved by all.  

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband William Archie Williams, Jr.; a son Bryant “Eddie” Edward Miles; two brothers Roy and Douglas Meadows; sister Mary Frances Pierce; and three step-sisters, Evangeline Jones, Virginia Jolly, and Ruth Brown.

Mrs. Williams is survived by her children Ricky Miles and wife Linda; Jamie Miles and wife Terry; Lorie Warren; and Kris Miles and wife Lisa.  Her step-children, Brenda Futrell; Ruth Williams; Patricia Warren; and Tom Williams.  Her brothers and sisters, Claude E. Meadows, Jr., Charles Meadows, Eva Lewis, Jackie King, Edith Evans, Blanche Moseley, Marie Lewis, and Genevive Varnell.  Mrs. Williams is also survived by her grandchildren, Brandon Miles; Jade Miles (Mike); Brandy Miles; Heather Miles (Dennis); Michael Warren; Scott Warren; KJ Miles (Megan); Shannon Miles.  Step-grandchildren, Ashton Elias; Brandle Lewis; Ethan E. Warren.  Great-grandchildren, Adalaina Miles; Ryan Warren; Scottie Warren; and Brantley Miles.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and the family pet Molly.

A memorial service celebrating Mrs. Williams’ life will be held Thursday, August 22nd at 11:00 AM at Community Center Baptist Church with Rev. Aaron Pendley officiating.  The family will receive friends at the home. 

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Community Center Baptist Church 2360 Ridgecrest Rd. Halifax, NC 27839.

Mr. Matthew Ransom 'Buck' Kilpatrick Jr.

Mr. Matthew Ransom “Buck” Kilpatrick, Jr., 85, of Weldon passed away Friday, August, 16, 2013 at Hampton Manor in Gaston.

Mr. Kilpatrick was born May 11, 1928 in Halifax County to the late Matthew Ransom Kilpatrick, Sr. and Edith Switzer Kilpatrick.  A veteran of the U.S. Army, who also worked for 32 years with Champion Paper Company, Mr. Kilpatrick loved sports and excelled in all sports in his younger days.  

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Jennings Kilpatrick.

Mr. Kilpatrick is survived by his wife Katherine West Kilpatrick; two sisters Elsie Edwards of Seaboard and Phyllis Jenkins and husband Murril of Lake Gaston.  He is also survived by a special nephew Kenny Jenkins and wife Vickie, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration of Mr. Kilpatrick’s life will be held Tuesday, August 20th, 2013 at 7:00 PM at the home of his nephew Kenny Jenkins, 1119 Georgia Ave. Roanoke Rapids, NC.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association 7272 Greenville Avenue Dallas, TX 75231.

Macie Roberta Rhea

Macie Roberta Rhea age 87 of Ahoskie, NC passed away August 17, 2013 at Creekside Manor in Ahoskie. 

Macie was born April 28, 1926 in Bertie County North Carolina the daughter of the late George Dunning and Sally Ann Hall Dunning.  

Macie worked many years as a nurse aide.

Survivors include her husband Horace Floyd Rhea of Ahoskie; Her two daughters Joann Casper Harrell (Jesse) of Ahoskie and Sandra Kaye Parker of Ahoskie; Her two sons Lloyd Stevenson Casper (Sallie) of Henderson, NV and Jack Dunning Casper (Robin) of Woodland, NC; Her two sisters Nancy Dunning Conner of Aulander and Marian Dunning Dilday (Henry) of Ahoskie and one brother George Dunning, Jr. (Jean) of Florida, also many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC which is handling the arrangements with Rev. J N Baggett officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Ahoskie.

The family will receive friends prior to the service Wednesday from 12:00 noon until 1:30 P.M. and other times at the home of Marian Dilday in Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Sharon Smith Pare age 57 of Battleboro, NC died Saturday August 17, 2013 at Enfield Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation in Enfield, NC.

Mrs. Pare was born October 22, 1955 in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of the late Leonard and Barbara Smith. She was also predeceased by her sister Debra Papa. 

She was a nurse’s aide for many years and worked at Kent County Hospital in Warrick, Rhode Island.

She is survived by her husband Richard P. Pare of Battleboro, NC. Her children, Paul, Meechan, Amanda, Christina, Ashley, Brittaney, Courtney and Richard Pare Jr.Eleven great grandchildren and a brother Kevin Smith.Services will be held at a later date in Rhode Island.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC.

Elvin Lee Moody 63, of Roanoke Rapids died Saturday August 17, 2013.

Elvin a native of Halifax County was the son of the late Clarence Goodridge and Grace Johnson Moody. He loved Music, dancing, and fishing.

He is survived by his daughter Stacy L. Coley and her husband Thomas of Stokes; his brothers Clarence Gordon Moody and his wife Libby of Kernersville and Dave A. Moody and his wife Angela of Gaston; his step- mother Margaret Moody of Gaston; his three grand children Caleb, Farren and Noah and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held Wednesday August 21, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Tony Smith officiating. 

The family will receive friends Tuesday August 20, 2013 from 7-8:30 at the funeral home.

Ruby Alene Grimes, 88, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2013.  

She was born on June 28, 1925 to Edgar Allen Stafford and Agnes Eason Stafford in Johnston County, NC.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband Reverend Joseph Junior Grimes.  She is survived by 4 daughters, Wanda Grimes Labozzetta and her husband Tony of Chapin, SC; Gloria Grimes Boyles of Columbia, SC; Patricia Grimes Sandlin and her husband Chris of Roanoke Rapids; and Nancy Grimes Adkins of Smithfield, NC; 2 sons, Kenneth I. Grimes and wife Beverly of South Haven, MS; William O. Grimes and wife Bettie of Murfreesboro, NC; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  

She was a member of Smith United Methodist Church and served with her husband in Methodist ministries for 37 years.  

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Smith United Methodist Church with Reverend Tom Schwartz officiating.   

The family will receive friends at Smith United Methodist Church from 1:00 pm until service time on August 21, 2013.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to United hospice 301 S. church street Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

Mr. David Wayne Hux age 56 of Gaston, NC died August 20, 2013 at his home.

David was born January 10, 1957 in Roanoke Rapids, NC the son of the late Floyd L. Hux and Fannie Dunston Hux Fite. He was also preceded in death by a brother William Henry Hux. He was a retired mechanic and enjoyed playing music with his guitar, harmonica and banjo.

He is survived by his daughter, Jessica Denise Hux of Newport News, VA. Two grandchildren, Cobi Hux and Adrian Hux. His sisters and brothers, Margaret H. Norton of Naples, Florida, Robert L. Hux of Indian Harbor Beach, Florida, Priscilla H. Davis and her husband Tex of Gaston, Frances H. Merritt and her husband Steve of Murrell’s Inlet, SC, Freddie Hux and his wife Robin of Gaston, Rebecca H. Seuis and her husband John of Gaston, Larry R. Hux and his wife Carolyn of Roanoke Rapids and Laura H. Anderton and her husband George of Murrell’s Inlet, SC. A special “Sister” Faye Carter and her husband Bob of Roanoke Rapids and his dearest friend David Lynn King of Gaston. Also many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 22, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Minister Daniel S. Merritt officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Walter Earl 'Butch' Daniel

2 Timothy 4:7:  “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith”

Walter Earl “Butch” Daniel, 56, of Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday August 20, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Butch, a native of Mecklenburg County Virginia, was the son of the late Linwood Wilson Daniel and his mother Frances Writtenberry Kidd and his step-father, Thomas Kidd. He was preceded in death by his son Timothy “Timmy” Daniel and two brothers Donald “Buck” Kidd and Wallace Kidd.

 

He was employed with LaBrecque Logging. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was the president of Daniel Hunt Club.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sherry Williams Daniel; his sisters, Emma Scriber of LaCrosse, Va., Sandra Murray and her husband Michael of Henderson, NC and Seretha Williams and her husband Philip of Henderson, NC; brother Kelvin Kidd of Gasburg, Va.; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and a niece with a special place in his heart, Natalie Williams.

Funeral Service will be held Friday August 23, 2013 at 3:30 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Russ Collins officiating.

Tammy Jean Denham, 51, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away August 15, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Curt G. Shelton.

Tammy is survived by her mother, Judy Brewer, her Aunt Yvonne Hathaway and cousins Amber McClum and Jessie Shelton.  

She is also survived by four special friends, Martha and Todd Gearheart and Jimmy and Betty Grant of Midland, Texas.

Tammy leaves behind her loving animals; Honey, Hinrick, Hilga, Dolly, Precious and RayRay.

 A memorial service celebrating her life will be held 2:00 pm Friday, August 23, 2013 in the chapel at Askew Funeral Services. Rev. Randy Martin will officiate.

Barbara Allen Mills 66, of Roanoke Rapids died Tuesday August 20, 2013 at her home.

Barbara a native of Jacksonville was the daughter of the late Joseph William Allen, Sr.

She was a graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in History and Secondary Education. She later went back to school while living in Whiteville earning her degree in Elementary Education from Pembroke State.  She taught school in Nash County, Whiteville City Schools, Waccamaw Academy, Halifax County, Weldon City Schools and retired from the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District.

She loved teaching school, especially Sunday school at Rosemary Baptist Church where she was a member. 

Barbara is survived by her husband of 45 years Andy Mills; their daughter Amy Mills Olson and her husband Matt of Winston-Salem;  their son Blaine Allen Mills and his fiancé’ Jessica Morris of Roanoke Rapids; their grandchildren Riley and Brayden Mills, Ethan and Sadie Olson; her Mother Evelyn T. Allen and her brother Joseph William Allen, Jr. both of Jacksonville.

Funeral service will be held Friday August 23, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Rosemary Baptist Church with Dr. Layne Wallace officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The Family will receive friends Friday from 9:45 A.M. until service time in the Church fellowship hall.

Lottie Mae Sebren

Lottie Mae Sebren left this life on Thursday, Aug 8, 2013.

She was born Feb 21, 1926 in Lake Providence, LA.

Her husband of 65 years, Warner Sebren, Sr., departed this life on Aug 1, 2011, but they have been reunited in heaven.

They lived in many places much like servicemen as they served in the army of their Lord. Love and music and the Bible were their weapons to touch many lives.

They are missed by family and friends. Lottie is survived by her three children, Warner Sebren, Jr., Thomas Sebren and Susan Evans.

She is survived by her sister, Cecile Davis, and by 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren (with one on the way) and too many nieces and nephews to count.

 

Lottie’s family extends their invitation to family and friends for her memorial service at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 2 pm to celebrate her life and her new life in heaven with Rev. Dennis Joyner officiating.

Mrs. Helen Frances Sumner Barnhill age 84 of Enfield, NC died Saturday, August 24, 2013.

Mrs. Barnhill was born May 22, 1929 in Hertford County, NC the daughter of the late John Lawrence Sumner and Emma Britton Sumner.  She was also preceded in death by her husband Maurice B. Barnhill and a brother, Lawrence Raleigh Sumner.Mrs. Barnhill worked for many years with People’s Bank and Centura Bank.

She is survived by her children, Vickie N. Riddle and her husband Johnny, Cheryle D. Neville and Greg Barnhill and his wife Stuart, all of Enfield, NC.  Two grandchildren, Wes Riddle and Carson Barnhill.  Her sister, Margaret Howard of Fuquay Varina, NC.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 26, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield Sunday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home.

John Arthur Suiter

 Mr. John Arthur Suiter Jr., age 77 of Garysburg, NC passed away at his home Wednesday, August 21, 2013.

Mr. Suiter was born October 29, 1935 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late John Arthur Suiter Sr. and Myrtle Anderton Suiter. He was also predeceased by a sister Martha “Peggy” Watkins Slade. He was a former member of the National Guard.

He was a local business man for many years and operated Suiter’s Store in Garysburg. He also operated a trucking service, but his love was in music. A very gifted musician he played the steel guitar and played for many years at the Lasker Barn Dance in Lasker, NC.

He is survived by his wife Joyce Bridgers Suiter. His daughters, Jan Suiter and Beth Suiter White, both of Halifax, NC. His son Ghi Suiter and his wife Susan also of Halifax, NC.  His granddaughters Emily and Madison Suiter. A sister Elizabeth Suiter Robinson of Skippers, VA and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 11:00 AM at

Garysburg United Methodist Church Cemetery in Garysburg with Rev. Steve Formo officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids

Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas TX 75231 or The American Cancer Society, 930 Wellness Drive # B, Greenville, NC 27834.
