Pearl L. Schaaf

Pearl Lawrence Schaaf, 89, of Halifax died Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Our Community Hospital in Scotland Neck.  

Mrs. Schaaf was born October 13, 1924 in Windsor, NC to the late Frank and Blanche Leicester Lawrence.  

Mrs. Schaaf worked as a public health nurse for the Halifax County Health Department for 25 years.  She retired as a supervisor in maternal and child health. She was an active member of Halifax United Methodist Church for 60 years, serving in the United Methodist Women and was a leader in the United Methodist Youth Fellowship.  

Mrs. Schaaf was a member of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Ladies Auxillary.  

She also served as a girl scout troop leader and was involved with PTA activities, and active with the Halifax County Cooperative Extension Home Demonstration Club.  

In addition to her parents Mrs. Schaaf was preceded in death by her husband Roy Schaaf and her sister Earline Bennett.

Mrs. Schaaf is survived by her daughters Regina Schaaf Dickens and husband Wayne and Diane Schaaf Medlin and husband Dale all of Littleton.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service at 3:00 PM with Rev. Steve Formo officiating.  Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.

Margaret Louise Hurst Craddock Knox

Margaret Louise Hurst Craddock Knox, 82, of Gaston died Saturday, November 09, 2013 at Halifax Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Knox was born February 11, 1931 in Halifax County to the late Earley Elbert and Leathy Arwood Hurst. 

Mrs. Knox was a member of Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church.  She was a longtime nurse’s assistant, she loved talking, singing, and was a self-taught musician who could play any instrument.  Mrs. Knox had a nursing home ministry and was a very good friend to everybody she ever met.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Knox was preceded in death by her husband Ernest F. Craddock, Sr.; son, Larry Craddock; 2 sisters, Dorothy Liles and Edith Holloway; 3 brothers, Lloyd, Leonard, and Elbert Hurst; and a grandson, Eric Craddock.

Mrs. Knox is survived by her sons, Ernest Franklin Craddock, Jr. and wife Shelia of Smiths, Al.; Thomas Earl Craddock and wife Irene of Yorktown, Va.; John Elbert Craddock of Gloucester, Va.; and Robert Jeffery Craddock of Surry County, Va.  Two brothers, Robert Payne Hurst and wife Anita; and Rev. James Ervin Hurst and wife Joyce all of Newport News, Va.; Her sister, Ruth Ezzell and husband Travis of Roanoke Rapids, 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Harvest Temple Penticostal Holiness Church with Rev. Norwood Starling and Rev. Tony Smith, officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday, November 11, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:30 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service and all other times at the home of Jean Christenbury 3409 Everetts School Rd.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested contributions be made to the American Cancer Society P.O. Box 22718 Oklahoma City, Ok. 73123-1718.

Kenneth "Kenny" Steven Bailey

Kenneth “Kenny” Steven Bailey, 50, departed this earthly life to be in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ who forgave him and Blessed him in the early morning of November 8, 2013 at Vidant Hospice Center in Greenville.  

Kenny is no longer burdened by the troubles of his life.  Kenny was born December 2, 1962 in Paterson, New Jersey to the late James Stanley Bailey and Barbara Emily Gill Bailey.  

In addition to his parents Kenny was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Steven Bailey, II; his older brother James Thomas Bailey; and his youngest sister; Barbara Sue Bailey Clark.  

Kenny is survived by his daughter, Jessica Kay Bailey Council and husband Gregory; his former wife Wanda Kay Harris Bailey; his brothers, James S. Bailey, Jr. and wife Pat all of Roanoke Rapids; Robert Lewis Bailey and wife Donna of Frisco, NC; his sisters Debra Bailey Horton; Sandra Bailey Spillane and husband Mike; and Kathy Jeanne Bailey all of Roanoke Rapids.  Kenny is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom he was close to.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 7:00 PM at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, with Billy Meinsen, Minister officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service.

Vicki Barrow Cox, 68, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.  

She was the daughter of the late Ruth (Baker) and David Cromwell Barrow.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sherri Leigh Cox.

She is survived by her daughter Terri Cox and Robert Taylor of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, David Cox of Roanoke Rapids; Jessica Haselman and husband, James of Roanoke Rapids; granddaughter, Allyssa Gates of the home;

Great- grandchildren, Michael Harrington, Abigail Cox, and Jackson Haselman; brother, David Eugene Barrow and wife, Brenda of Myrtle Beach, SC; niece, Tracy Barrow; aunt, Fannie Chestnut and her husband Leonidas of Roanoke Rapids; and life- long friend, Cecilia Martin of Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 14, 2013 from 7:00 to  8:30 pm at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday, November 15, 2013 at noon at Crestview Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, officiated by Rev. Michael Mooneyham.

Bois B. Cartwright

Bois B. Cartwright, 82, of Hertford County, NC, passed away on Nov. 9th, 2013 She was a retired school teacher,  a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church in Como, NC, and an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her two sons, David of Boston, MA, and Edward of Winterville, NC. She is also survived by Edward’s wife, Deborah, and her two grandchildren, Laura and Meredith. 

Mrs. Cartwright requested cremation and a small service to be led by her son David at her beloved Buckhorn Baptist Church. The Service was held as she requested on Nov. 13th.

Instead of flowers, the family requests gifts in her memory sent to Buckhorn Baptist Church, PO Box 67 Como, NC 27818. Notes of condolence may be sent to the Cartwright Family, 118 Knight Drive, Winterville, NC 28590.

Dan 'Danny' Albert Faison

Dan “Danny” Albert Faison, 66, died Friday, November 15, 2013 in Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville, NC

Mr. Faison was born in Halifax County, November 29, 1946, to the late Allison Gordon Faison and Edith Newsome Faison.  He worked in the construction business as a pipe fitter.  

Surviving is his sister, Linda Allen of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Andrew Gordon Faison and wife, Pam, of King, NC; niece, Dana Allen Cooke and husband, George, of King’s Mountain, NC, and nephews, Michael Faison of Greensboro, and Chris Faison of King, NC.  Also surviving are many cousins and many friends.  

Revs. Tom Swartz and Randy Martin will conduct a memorial service Sunday, November 17, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Smith United Methodist Church. 

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to Smith United Methodist Church, 1215 Smith Church Rd., Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Harold John Baust, 84, of Henrico, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2013.  

He was the son of the late Irene Virginia (Merritt) and Nicholas Julius Baust.

He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher J. Baust, and his first wife Loretta Scharschan Baust.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Shields Baust; daughter, Anne B. Kohlmann  and husband Steven of Huntington, NY; son, Raymond H. Baust and wife, Eileen, of Reisterstown, MD; 4 granddaughters and four great grandchildren; his brother Robert Baust and his wife Marion of Flagler, Florida.

Memorial Services will be held on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Ebony, Virginia with Father Anthony Mpungu officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services in the fellowship hall.

Rosa Sadler Blanton

Mrs. Rosa Sadler Blanton, 88, went to be the Lord and her loved ones, Monday, November 18, 2013 in the Roanoke Rapids Health & Rehabilitation Center. 

Mrs. Blanton was born in Halifax County, March 27, 1925, to the late Thomas Manson Sadler, Sr. and Clara Birdsong Sadler.  She was a long time member of the Church of God on the corner of 10th and Rapids St.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Blanton was preceded in death by her husband, Noah W. Blanton; son, Donnie Ray Blanton; daughter, Judith Diane Passmore; brother, Thomas “Dick” Manson Sadler, Jr.; sister, Lorine Crowder Stahl, and grandson, Kenney Blanton.  

Surviving is one son, Edward Wilson Blanton; one sister, Blanche Rose DeBerry and daughter-in-law, Brenda Blanton, all of Roanoke Rapids; two grandsons, Donnie Ray Blanton, Jr., and Rev. Barry Blanton and wife, Missy; one granddaughter, Rena Brown and four great-grandsons.  Also surviving are special friends, Myrtice and Pete Hall and special family friends, Ruth Evans and Ovid Carroll, as well as, many nieces, nephews and cousins.  

The family will receive friends, Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 9:30-10:30 am, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, and all other times at the home of Blanche DeBerry on Pinecrest Ave., Roanoke Rapids.  Pastor Michael Mooneyham will conduct funeral services immediately following the visitation in the chapel at Hockaday at 11:00 am.  Interment will be in Cedarwood Cemetery. 

The family has requested no flowers be sent, and that memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice in honor of Mrs. Blanton.

Earl C. 'Buck' Sigmon

Earl C. “Buck” Sigmon 79, of Halifax died Thursday, November 21, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. 

A native of Catawba County, North Carolina, Earl was the son of the late Edward Clarence and Annie Lee Huffman Sigmon.

“Buck” was an avid sportsman; he loved hunting, fishing, and golf. He played semipro baseball as a young man. 

He was a long time member of Halifax United Methodist Church. He served on many boards and committees within the church and once received the missionary of the year award from the church. He served on the Halifax Town Board and was the former Fire Chief with the Halifax Volunteer Fire Department. 

“Buck’ is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Drum Sigmon; his daughter Tami S. Vaughan of Rocky Mount; sons Mark Sigmon and his wife Deanna of Halifax and Eric Sigmon and his wife Melissa of Cary; eight grand children Michael Vaughan and Jenn, Amber S. Pope and her husband Chris, Meggon S. Hammack and her husband Jonathan, Brittney Sigmon, Cameron Sigmon, Caroline Sigmon, Kenley Sigmon and Mark Sigmon, Jr. four great grand children Kaiden and Bryson Vaughan, Bentley Ryan Bell and Bentley Alan Pope; and his mother-in-law Hazel B. Drum of Hickory, NC and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for “Buck” will be Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the Halifax United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Formo officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, November 23, 2013 from 7-8:30 P.M. at the Church and other times at the home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Halifax United Methodist Church prayer garden in “Buck’s” memory.

Elton Vaughan Gillikin, Jr., 55 of Raleigh Street died Saturday, November 23, 2013 at VCU Health System in Richmond, VA.

Mr. Gillikin was born November 3, 1958 in Virginia Beach, VA to the late Elton Vaughan Gillikin, Sr. and Dorothy Tew Gillikin.

Mr. Gillikin attended First Christian Church. He loved cooking and telling tall tales, he was a wonderful loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, very much a family man and was always trying to help others.

He is survived by his wife: Laura Armstrong Gillikin; his children: Pamela Gillikin Wells and her husband Michael, Shelley Renee Gillikin and her fiancé Anthony Sean Waters, Shawn Ryan Gillikin and his fiancé Brittany L. Schornik, Jacob Vaughan Gillikin and Holly Michele Gillikin all of Roanoke Rapids; his sister: Jan G. Draper and her husband Ritchie of Roanoke Rapids; his brother: Timothy Gillikin and his wife Cindy of Fernandina Beach, FL; his grandchildren: Anthony Blake Waters, Landen Wells, Caleb Waters, Emily Grace Wells and Carson Tyler Waters all of Roanoke Rapids; his nieces: Judith McKnight and her husband Matthew, Kelsey Draper and Kimberly Liles.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Bane Angles, Minister officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at the funeral home and other times at the home.

Ashley Clayton Smith

Ashley Clayton Smith, 66, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013.  

He was the son of the late Ernest Smith and Margaret Finch Miller.

Ashley was a long time Boy Scouts of America leader where he was involved for over forty years. He was the recipient of the Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts of America.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Margo Ivey Smith; daughter Erin S. Earle and husband, Mike of Wyalusing, PA; son, Lee Smith and wife Pam of Fayetteville, NC; 6 great grandchildren, Jessica Dayne Smith, Miranda Faith Smith, Jonathan Michael Earle, Kayleigh Dianan Smith, Morrigan Elizabeth Smith, and Conner James Earle; 3 brothers, Braxton “Butch” Brown and wife, Faye of Roanoke Rapids, David Miller of Roanoke Rapids, and Jeff Smith and wife, Debbie of Easton, PA; special sons, Travis Mahaffey and wife, Robin and their son Aiden and Michael Clark; sisters in law, Angel Whitby and husband, Andy of Weldon, NC, Inez Futrell and husband, John of Woodland, NC.

The family expresses a special thank you to everyone who has supported them throughout the last 18 months.

John Locke Mitchell, age 86 of Ahoskie, NC passed away November 12, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.

John was born September 4, 1927 in Hertford County North Carolina the son of the late George Locke Mitchell and Gladys Jernigan Clements.

He was also preceded in death by his wife Shirley Jean Mitchell, his brother Bob Mitchell, his daughter Mariam Connor and grandson Brandon Mitchell. John was an Army Veteran of twenty nine years, a Korean War Veteran and Viet Nam Veteran.

Survivors include his two sons; Randall Mitchell of Greenville, NC and Gene Mitchell (Patty) of Roxobel, NC; His daughter Ann Blake (John) of Charlotte, NC; His three grandchildren Courtney Mitchell, Sheri Lassiter and Jennifer Brock and his four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 15, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at Sandy Run Baptist Church in Roxobel, NC with Rev. Dave Rimel officiating. Burial will follow in Harrellsville Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Faye Dickens Rawls

Mrs. Faye Dickens Rawls age 80, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 15, 2013.

Mrs. Rawls was born January 5, 1933 in Bertie County, NC the daughter of the late Felix Edward Dickens and Amanda Dickens. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband Robert Harold Rawls, a son, H. Keith Rawls, sisters, Audrey Bunting, Emily Long, Flora Glenn Hardy, Brenda Hardy and her brothers, Laverne Dickens and Haywood Dickens.

Known by many names, whether it was Faye, Mama, Granny or Miss Faye, she was a loving unselfish woman who exemplified what it means to be a caregiver. Her dedication and sacrifice for her family were only exceeded by the love she had for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  

Her sweet and humble spirit truly affected all who crossed her path.  She will remain always an example to those who loved her so dearly. She was a member of Ebenezer Assembly of God Church. .

She is survived by her sons Michael Rawls and his wife Cecile of Greenville, NC, Mark Rawls and his wife Marie of Windsor, NC, David Rawls of Williamston, NC and daughter-in-law Jennie Rawls of Williamston, NC. 

Her grandchildren, Brian Rawls, Valerie Verdin, Stacey Wiggins, Morgan Nichols, Chase Rawls, Elizabeth Revels and Rachel Rawls.  Her great grandchildren, Isabella Wiggins, Ashton Wiggins and Mariah Verdin.  Her sisters, Mary Virginia Jernigan, Joyce Brett and Anne Futrell.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 18, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Ebenezer Assembly of God Church with Rev. Timmy Parker and Rev. Ralph Rawls officiating.  Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC.

The family will receive friends Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Ebenezer Assembly of God Church  from 4:00 until 5:30 PM.

Aubrey Martin Barkley

Aubrey Martin Barkley, Sr., 69, died Sunday, December 01, 2013 at Vidant Health Center in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Barkley was born in Halifax County February 2, 1944 to the late William Lacy Barkley and Lucy Mae Keeter Barkley.  He was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church and loved his church family and the Lord.  He was a great husband, dad, grand dad, and great-grand dad.  He was a God loving man that was big-hearted and was also a “die-hard” TARHEEL fan.  Mr. Barkley also was owner and operator of Barkley’s Frame Shop.

Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Marie Horne Barkley of the home; son, Aubrey M. Barkley, Jr. and wife, Tena, of Williamsburg, VA and two daughters, Kim Davis and husband, Troy Askew and Tammy Shaw and husband, Freddie, all of Roanoke Rapids; seven grandchildren, Shannon Edenbeck, Brittany Trent, Justin Banty, Dusty May, Ashely May, Matthew Davis and Joshua Barkley; one great-grandchild, Addison May.  Also surviving are a nephew and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Monday, December 2, 2013 from 7-8:30 pm.  Pastor Mike Little will conduct a funeral service Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Maranatha Baptist Church with interment to follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Vernard Eugene 'Doc Beanie' Jones

Vernard Eugene “Doc” “Beanie” Jones, 79, died, Friday, November 29, 2013, in Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Jones was born in Halifax County, March 26, 1934, to the late William Walter Jones and Mary Pfeffer Jones.

 He was a retired combat medic and Vietnam veteran with the United States Army.  

Mr. Jones was also a lifelong member of AmVets, the VFW and Eagles of America. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jones is preceded in death by his son, Martin Pete Vandermey, and his brother, Charles Jones.

Surviving is his “significant other”, Katherine Fast of Roanoke Rapids; one daughter, Jacqueline Monique Jones Thompson of Gunnison, Colorado; two brothers, Walter Stanley Jones and wife, Teresa, of Havelock, NC and Ronald David Jones and wife, Linda, of Roanoke Rapids; three grandchildren, Julie Marie Perdue and husband, David, Amy Elizabeth Padgett and husband, Rodger, and LCpl. Jessica Monique Thompson; six great-grandchildren, Linwood Thomas Brewer, Michael Riley Brewer, Joseph Henry Brewer, Makayla Fisher, Emily Fisher, and Ja’Lynn Fisher.  Also surviving is Sissy Jones, Linda Jones and several other nieces and nephews, and a special friend, whom he called (son), James Fisher and wife, Nicki.  

Rev. Bane Angle will conduct a memorial service celebrating Mr. Jones’ life, Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 3:00 pm at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.

Mabel Janet Butts (Coker) Harrell, 86, died Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Mrs. Harrell was born October 15, 1927 in Selma, NC to the late Joseph McNeil Butts and Bessie Maybelle Green Butts.

Mrs. Harrell accepted Christ as Savior in 1939 and baptized at the age of12 at First Baptist Church in Henderson, NC.  

Mrs. Harrell graduated from Henderson High School as president of the senior class and was voted “Most Dependable.”  

She attended the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary, graduated from Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond and was certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists in January 1949.  

She served as an associate member MT (ASCP) 15977 and serving in hospital laboratories from 1948 to 1998 including Roanoke Rapids Hospital, Halifax County Health Department, Community Hospital of South Hill, Va., Warren County Hospital, Wilson Memorial Hospital, Moses Cone Hospital of Greensboro, NC, Richmond Memorial Hospital, and Wake Memorial Hospital in Raleigh. 

Mrs. Harrell married to Eugene Cecil Coker of Henderson on November 21, 1948.  This marriage brought forth three premature children who did not survive infancy and are buried in the Rhea Family Cemetery. This marriage then ended in divorce.

Mrs. Harrell accepted Christ as Lord in 1965 at Quankie Baptist Church and was baptized at Weldon Baptist Church.

Mrs. Harrell then married Stewart Havens Harrell of Roanoke Rapids (a native of Martin County, and the son of the late Jasper Havens Harrell and Nora Diantha “Antha” Mizell Harrell.) on June 3, 1967.

Mrs. Harrell was listed in Marquis’ Who’s Who of American Women (1983-1984).

In addition to her parents and husband, and infant children, Mrs. Harrell was preceded in death by her stepmother Annie Mae Martin Butts.

Mrs. Harrell is survived by her son Joseph Stewart Harrell and wife Mable J. Harrell; daughter, Diantha Rhea Harrell Cavnar; her grandchildren, George Wayne Harrell, Haven Rhea Cavnar, and Seanna Evelynn Cavnar.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Quankie Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Hardwick officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 to 1:00 prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Quankie Baptist Church.

LeRoy Graham Barlowe

LeRoy Graham Barlowe, 87, of Roanoke Rapids died Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Mr. Barlowe was born May 10, 1926 in Halifax County to the late Jay H. and Lucy Rittenberry Barlow.  

Mr. Barlowe served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a Sgt. with the 4th Marine Air Wing during World War II being stationed in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946.  

Mr. Barlowe later retired from the North Carolina Department of Corrections after 19 years and then continued to work with the Juvenile Services Division in Halifax.  Mr. Barlowe was also a member of Victory Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Barlowe was preceded in death by his first wife, Rae Wilson; two daughters Cynthia Edwards and Vivian Little; his sisters, Lora B. Moore, Alta Fay B. Gibson, Catherine B. Vaughan; and a brother Clarence L. Barlow.

Those living to cherish his memory are his wife: Drusella Barlowe; his brother:  Marvin Barlowe and wife Norma Jean all of Roanoke Rapids.  Sisters:  Patricia B. Parrish and husband V.R. of Gum Spring, Va., and Shirley B. Adams of Jacksonville, Fl.  His grandchildren:  Brian Short, David Little, and Brent Edwards, and 4 great grandchildren.  Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and a special niece and nephew Leesa and Tommy Daughtry.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Victory Baptist Church with Pastor Doug Gross and Pastor Gary Moore officiating.  Burial with Military Honors will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 11, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service and all other times at the home.
