William Joseph Harlow

Willie Joseph Harlow, 53 of Robinson Drive, Roanoke died Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.


Mr. Harlow was born May 9, 1960 in Halifax County to the late Genie Harlow, Sr. and Lois Joyner Harlow.  He was also preceded in death by two sisters: Cassie Arthur and Teresa Harlow.

He attended Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church.  He was an avid golfer, hunter and sports fan. He was a wonderful father, brother and friend, he and his brother Genie were inseparable and he loved everyone unconditionally.  Mr. Harlow was also a father-figure and mentor and friend to his nephew Thomas. His family knows that Willie went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his children: Valerie Patterson of Rocky Mount, NC, Willie Harlow, II of Coushatta, LA, Joseph Neal Harlow of Smithfield, NC and Noah Robert Lendwood Harlow of the home; two step-children: Zane and Tory Young of Louisiana; two brothers: Genie Harlow, Jr. and his wife Gloria  and Charlie Harlow  and his wife Patricia both of Roanoke Rapids; four sisters: Mary Mozingo and her husband Troy and Nora Shelton both of Roanoke Rapids, Lorenda Wright and her husband Mark of San Antonio, TX, Lois Jones and her husband Adrian of Halifax; seven grandchildren,; numerous nieces and nephews; special friend Robert “Rock” Turner.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Tony Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. Friday, December 20, 2013 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home.

Marjorie Shaw Shaw, 85 of Sam Powell Dairy Road died Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Shaw was born August 8, 1928 in Halifax County to the late Joe Shaw and LuLa Powell Shaw.  She was also preceded in death by her husband: Arthur Shaw; her sister: Iona Rogers; her brothers: Woodrow, Jessie and Johnnie Shaw; her niece: Martha Williams; and her nephew: Leon Shaw.

Mrs. Shaw is survived by her two sisters: Sadie King and Betty Morris both of Roanoke Rapids; her nieces and nephews: Terry Shaw, Arlene Smith, Edward Shaw, Kathy Liles, Patricia Tippett and Herbert Rogers all of Roanoke Rapids, Shelia Shaw and William T. Shaw both of Canton, NC, Larry Shaw of Jessup, GA and Sylvia Branch of Littleton.  The family would also like to give special thanks to her caregivers: Shirley Kearney, Beverly Norman and Kalesia Harvey and also to the staff of Community Home Care and Hospice.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 20, 2013 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.  Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30- P.M. prior to the service and other times at the home.

Michael Carter Murphy

Michael Carter Murphy, 37, died Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham.

Michael was born in Columbia, SC, February 25, 1976, to Jesse Carter Murphy and Brenda Griffin Murphy.  Michael was a dispatch manager for AAA of the Carolinas, and an on air personality with WZRU in Roanoke Rapids.  He was also an avid Tarheel fan.  He is preceded in death by his father, Jesse Carter Murphy.  

Surviving is his wife, Kristal Smith Murphy of the home; mother, Brenda Ann Murphy; step-sons, Allen Chapman and Aiden Chapman; step-daughter, Alexis Chapman; sister, Karen Murphy Vick, and husband, Melvin; maternal grandmother, Lillian Thompson; niece, Kaitlin Vick and nephew, Joshua Vick, all of Roanoke Rapids.

The family will have a graveside service at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, Friday, December 27, 2013 at 11:00 am.

Flowers are accepted and the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to Hockaday Funeral Home in honor of Michael C. Murphy.

Dennis Ray 'Pedro' Bullock

Emporia, Virginia- Dennis Ray “Pedro” Bullock 65, of Emporia, Va. died Tuesday December 24, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends, after a long illness.

He was born in Roanoke Rapids to Curtis and Annie Cross Bullock.

Dennis attended Roanoke Rapids high school. He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corp serving in the Vietnam era, ending his career, as a Gunnery SGT after 15 years, when his father-in-law became ill and was asked to take over his family business. He was the President/owner and operator of Greens service center Inc. T/A Emporia Muffler and South Hill Muffler and Exxon’s towing until his declining health in 2012, when he handed the family business in Emporia over to his sons to carry on.

Dennis was the past President, of the Richmond charter of the Virginia towing and operator’s Association. An avid sportsman, he loved hunting, four wheeling, cooking and camping especially at NASCAR races. He loved his Dallas Cowboy’s! 

As Dennis would say “ I Lordy Steve”; “ SARLIB”.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Nancy Greene Bullock and their two sons, Brian Bullock and his wife, Missy and Kevin Bullock and his wife, Tracy all of Emporia; his parents Curtis and Annie Bullock of Littleton; grand children, Lee Bullock and his wife Brittney;  Courtney Bullock and her fiancee’ Dustyn Sampson; Matthew Bullock, Hunter Bullock and Graden Bullock; great grandson, Trey Bullock; brother Jerry Bullock and his, wife Bunny of Roanoke Rapids; sister Maria “Sug” Bullock and her, partner Sue Chinn of Spokane, Washington and numerous aunts and nieces and nephews.

Funeral service for Dennis, will be held Saturday December 28, 2013 at 2 P.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. David Martin, Minister of Gaston Church of Christ and by Rev. Warren Exline, retired family Minister and friend.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Military honors.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30 until service time at the Funeral Home.

Travis Wayne Hooker, 26, of Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, December 22, 2013.  

Travis was born April 18, 1987 to Kimberly Parrish and the late James Edward Hooker, Jr.  

Travis loved to work on motorcycles, dirt bikes, scooters, and could fix anything.  

Travis was an all-around good person who would help anyone, and would give you the shirt off his back.  

Travis deeply loved his mom, his daughter, his Granddaddy, cousins, and family.  Travis definitely was not afraid to speak his mind.  In addition to his father, Travis was preceded in death by his grandparents, James Edward Hooker, Sr., Anita Hooker, and Sharon Wells.

Travis is survived by his mother and step-father, Kimberly Parrish and Ed Taylor; his daughter, Alexia Ray Hooker; his step-sister, Faith Marie Taylor; his grandfather Charles Wells; his aunts, Sue Norton, Teresa Smith, Kim Bohannon, and Raven Hudgins; his uncles, Kelly Parrish and Billy Parrish; his cousins, Fonda Butler, Tracy Norton, Brandon Smith, Michael Smith, Lex Martin, Crystal Ramondi, Christopher Parrish, Keeley Parrish, Haley Parrish, Julie Parrish, and Billy Shane Parrish.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 11:00 am at Cedarwood Cemetery with Rev. Randy Martin, officiating.  The family will receive friends Monday, December 30, 2013 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.

Magnora 'Mag' Person Lynch

Mrs. Magnora “Mag” Person Lynch, age 95 of Enfield, NC was called to eternal rest while surrounded by her family Wednesday, December 25, 2013.

Mrs. Lynch was born December 15, 1918 in Nash County North Carolina the daughter of the late Frank Person and Mary Sanders Person.


At an early age she became a member of Pine Chapel Baptist Church and remained a devoted member until her death. In 1936 she was married to

the late Oliver Lynch in Halifax County, North Carolina.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Rosa Herring, and four brothers, Tommy Person, James Person, Major Person, and Frank Person, Jr. She was also

welcomed to Heaven by a son-in-law William Booth and one grandson William (Sugg) E. Booth.

Magnora is survived by her two sisters, Ella McGee of Baltimore, MD, Verty Lynch of Enfield, NC and one brother Nelson Person of Littleton,

NC. One niece raised as a sister Lou Jean Silver.

She leaves to cherish her memories seven children Vivian O’dell Booth, Oliver “John” L. Lynch (Faye), George “Dump” E. Lynch (Edith), Leonard Lynch, Curtee

Richardson (Stanley), Velma Silver and Selma Richardson. Sixteen grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great

grandchildren along with many relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Pine Chapel Baptist Church 37571 NC 561 Hollister, NC 27844 with Rev. Robert G. Hedgepeth officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Church Cemetery Hwy 43 south Hollister, NC.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield Saturday, December 28, 2013 from 4:00 until 7:30 PM and other times at the home. The family will be present at the Funeral Home from 6:00 until 7:30 PM. All friends and family are invited to repast in Pine Chapel fellowship hall following burial.

 Mrs. Leasie Virginia Davis Hasty, age 97 of Margarettsville, NC died Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Scotland Manor in Scotland Neck, NC.

Mrs. Hasty was born March 21, 1916 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Matt Thomas Davis and Annie Rebecca Davis.  She was also predeceased by her husband, Floyd C. Hasty Sr.  

She was a faithful member of Margarettsville Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, Annie Virgina Peede, Carolyn Marie Hasty, Floyd C. Hasty Jr. and his wife Sonee, Frances Hasty Warrington, Charlie Thomas Hasty and his wife Elizabeth, Marshall Wayne Hasty and Rosa Leigh Nally and her husband Jerry.  Seventeen grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Margarettsville Baptist Church.  Burial will follow at the Davis Family

Cemetery.

Virginia Rose Morgan, age 65 of Aulander passed away on December 16, 2013 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. 

Virginia was born January 13, 1948 in Hertford County North Carolina the daughter of the late William Johnnie Harrell and Martha Jane Cooke Harrell. 

She worked many years for Claudine’s Restaurant as a cook.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years Randolph Morgan of Aulander, NC; Her two daughters Toni Morgan Pierce (William) of Aulander, NC and Michelle Jones of Harrellsville, NC; Her sister Joan Crawford Harrell of Aulander, NC; Her brother Richard Harrell (Penny) of Ahoskie, NC and her grandson William Ashton Pierce of Aulander, NC.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 20, 2013 at 12:00 noon at St. Johns Baptist Church in Ahoskie, NC with Rev. Garry Medford, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Aulander Cemetery.

Stephen “Steve” Futrell Warrick, age 59 passed away on December 23, 2013 at Rich Square Health Care Center in Rich Square, NC.

Steve was born March 19, 1954 in Northampton County North Carolina the son of the late William Bruce Warrick, Sr. and Betty Louise Futrell Warrick.

Steve farmed for most of his life and worked for Boone Farm Supply.

Survivors include his daughter; Stephanie Warrick of Jackson, NC; his two sisters Cathy Edwards of Jackson, NC and Barbara Jernigan (Skip) of

Rich Square, NC; his three brothers Billy Warrick (Beverly) of Murfreesboro, NC, Richard Warrick of Jackson, NC and Jerry Warrick of St. Johns, NC; his four nieces Jo Marie Barwick, Stephanie Sloan, Angel Rawls and Sarah Lassiter; his five nephews Chad Warrick, Chris Warrick, Dan Warrick, Matt Lassiter and Don Jernigan.

Graveside services will be held December 26, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Warrick Family Cemetery with Rev. Jim Cox officiating. The family will

Billy Bridges, 79 of Hedgepeth Road, Halifax died Thursday, December 26, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Bridges was born November 9, 1934 in Damascus, Georgia to the late George H. Bridges and Lucy McNair Bridges.  He was also preceded in death by three brothers: J.R. Bridges, David L. Bridges and George H. Bridges.

He attended Darlington Baptist Church and retired from the United States Navy and United States Air Force after 23 years of service to his country.

Mr. Bridges is survived by his wife: Edwina of the home; his son Brandt Clay and his wife Lori of Enfield; his daughter: Pamela Harrison and her husband Gib of Manteo; his grandchildren: Matthew Clay, Christopher Clay and his wife Kelsey, Will Harrison and Keeli Harrison; his brothers: Bobby J. Bridges and William T. Bridges; his sisters: Ida Sue Goldfarb, Lucy Anderson, Jean Linsenby and Lilly Belle Searles. 

Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Richard Newton and Gib Harrison officiating.  Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:30 P.M. Sunday prior to the service and other times at the home.

Garland Bruce Storey Jr., age 66 of Rich Square, NC died Thursday, December 26, 2013 at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, VA.

Mr. Storey was born July 23, 1947 in Halifax County, NC the son of the late Garland Bruce Storey Sr. and Ruby Coggins Storey. He was a member of Rich Square Baptist Church and a US Army Veteran having served his country during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife Barbara N. Storey, his son Garland Bruce Story III and his wife Traci, his daughter Jeannie S. Crissman and her husband Wesley of Red Oak, NC. His mother Ruby C. Storey of Rich Square. His sisters, Barbara Cargill of San Diego, California and Linda Lewis and her husband Ted of Atlantic Beach, NC.  His grandchildren, Grace Nicole Storey, Braxton Jeremy Miller and Brantley Patrick Miller. Three nieces, Michelle Pierce, Jennifer Farmer and Colbie Lee-Cargill.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 30, 3013 at 2:00 PM at Rich Square Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Rogers officiating.  Burial will follow with military honors at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Sunday December 29, 2013 from 3:00 until 5:00 PM.

Frances was born July 26, 1937 in Bertie County, North Carolina the daughter of the late Shirley Worth Todd and Sally Lucille Askew Todd. She was also preceded in death by her sister Janice Castellow.

Survivors include her husband of fifty eight years James Robert Farless of Shelbyville, TN; Her brothers Gene Worth Todd of Scotland Neck, NC and Freddie O’Neal Todd of Merry Hill, NC.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC with Rev. Jeff Russell officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC prior to the service from 9:30 until 10:30 AM. We will then go in a funeral procession to the cemetery.

Lois Opal Summerville Bullock age 91 of Jackson, NC passed away on January 1, 2014 at Rich Square Health Care Center in Rich Square, NC.


Lois was born March 19, 1922 in Mentor, Ohio the daughter of the late Jack Summerville and Blanche Eley Summerville.

Survivors include her two daughters; Toni Grimm (Harry) of Arlington, VA and Peggy Bullock Bright of Jackson, NC; her two sons Bobby Bullock of Idaho and Larry Bullock (Sally) of Jackson, NC; her grandchildren Lois, Lee, Ray, Travis, Shasta, Brandy and Sammie Jo; fifteen great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Lois will be held Monday, January 6, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Cemetery with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.

Otto Benjamin Wright, age 75 passed away on January 1, 2014 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Otto was born September 27, 1938 in Brunswick County, Virginia the son of the late John Givens Wright and Patsy Lynche Wright.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Geneva Pierce Wright and a son Ricky Smith.  

Otto worked many years in the plastic industry as a lead mechanic. He worked very hard during his life and was a loving father too all his children.

Survivors include his two daughters Brenda Cox of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Linda Johnson (Glenn) of Fairfield, CA; his two sons Otto Benjamin Wright, II of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Danny Smith of Germany. Ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 5, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC which is handling the arrangements with Rev. Barry Garner officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM Sunday.

Emma Sexton

Emma Sexton, 83, of Gaston, NC, passed away peacefully in her home after losing her battle with cancer and is now reunited with her husband, Billy Ray Sexton.

Mrs. Sexton was from Germany.  

She is survived by her six children, Raymond Sexton, Jamie Sexton, Kathy Piletowski, Debbie Goldman, Brenda Sexton and Cindy Sexton.  She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild, and many cherished friends.

A graveside service will be held at Cedarwood Cemetery, January 4, 2014 at 1:00 pm for family and close friends.
